welcome…

Despite the rush to get new school uniforms and make sure everyone can find their pencil case, the autumn term feels like an exciting time. Even people without school-aged children get that 'fresh start' feel at this time of year. It's not all about writing neatly in the first page of a new exercise book, it's about planning something new to stitch and perhaps even to start making for Christmas. Yes, we are declaring the Christmas season open! We have two wonderful large designs to get your stitching teeth into – our cover star reindeer and Shannon Wasilief's stunning sampler. This giant pull-out chart will be a classic for years to come. We have some very special gift ideas too. Handmade is great but personalised is even better! Try our guide…

Often including retro-inspired typography, her latest range is all about traditional flower designs, updated for today. “Florals are everywhere these days, and I couldn’t be happier about that,” Sara enthuses. “I wanted to create fresh new designs that incorporated some feminine florals to be that perfect addition to any wall, all customisable of course.” Sara learnt to cross stitch as a little girl, and years later as a new mum, decided to get back into it as a creative outlet. She then mocks up rough drafts on her computer, before sketching out…

My husband, two dogs and a cat vie for my attention. The changing seasons and the wonders of nature hold me in awe. When did you fall in love with cross stitch? I was ten when my grandmother drew my initials on cloth and showed me how to stitch over the lines. I can’t remember a time when I’ve not had a cross stitch project on the go, from a peace symbol in the seventies, to birth announcements for my daughters, up to my present day efforts. What sort of things do you most like to stitch? I usually cross stitch…

3 of the best… autumn designs

Fox, £17.99 Foxgloves, grasses and woodland berries make a beautiful background to this slumbering fox by Karen Carter. The creamy yellow background is fully stitched, making this a really satisfying project. You can choose 27 count evenweave fabric or 14 count aida. The finished size is around 5x5in (12.5x12.5cm) and will look really sweet in a square frame. Buy the kit from www.hcrafts.com or call 01889 575256. An Autumnal Landscape, £8.95 This atmospheric scene is based on original artwork by William Luker, and shows a flock of sheep gathered in a nostalgic English woodland. Though only whole cross stitches are needed, the subtlety of the design requires more than 70 different threads shades, making this a truly absorbing project. The finished picture stitched on 16 count aida measures around 53x32cms (20¾x12½in). You can…
