This week we feature our Christmas gift guide. Six pages filled with cool stuff we think you’d like to open after you get back from your morning ride. (Be sure to leave this issue lying around the house. Casually circle your favourite item if you like.) I enforced one rule when selecting items — no cycling kit. Why? Because it’s a rule enforced in the Richardson household for a few reasons. For a start, bike kit is too expensive for most of my family members to buy. And they’d never know the difference between an Italian and British-thread bottom bracket anyway My brother-in-law broke this rule a few years back and, although he doesn’t know it, it ranks as my worst ever (he doesn’t read CW, so I’m safe). He bought me…

powerhouse cummings hangs up his wheels

When Steve Cummings announced his retirement from pro cycling last week he did so just as he spent his career — without fuss, without fanfare. In fact he did so with his neck in a brace, thanks to a crash on stage five in September’s Tour of Britain, just down the road from his home on the Wirral. It left him with four broken vertebrae in his thoracic spine and wiped him out for the rest of the year. It was an unfortunate bookend to a 15-year career that he began with the Birkenhead North End club, and finished on the Birkenhead-Birkenhead stage. Cummings, now 38-years-old, revealed the news to Ned Boulting on his Road Book podcast. He had hoped to continue for one more season, he said, but having been dropped…

cummings’s chart toppers

2017 National Championship double, Isle of Man After a narrow win over Alex Dowsett in the 44.4km time trial, Cummings went clear with 10km left in the road race, finishing with 40sec in hand. 2016 Tour de France, stage seven Possibly his finest hour, going solo as the race hit a mountain and descending into the finish at Lac de Payolle. 2016 Critérium du Dauphiné, stage seven Cummings attacks with more than 40km to ride, leaving the GC battle raging in his wake. Survives over a first-cat and third-cat climb to win by four minutes. 2015 Tour de France, stage 14 Cummings hits Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot at the top of the climb to Mende, overhauling them at speed metres from the line for MTN-Qhubeka’s first Tour stage win. 2004 Athens Olympic Games, team pursuit silver medal Having…

ffion james cleans up in wales

After declining a ride at the Cyclo-cross World Cup, Ffion James went in search of domestic honours much closer to home. The Hope Factory Racing rider from Abergavenny took her first win of the year in the National Trophy series on home ground in South Wales. James was in formidable form, taking the lead on the opening lap, and despite being put under pressure from Sophie Thackray (Scott Racing) in the early stages, she pulled out a winning gap of 57 seconds. Thackray took second and Xan Crees (Team Empella Cyclo-Cross) third. “It means a lot, my whole family was out here watching so I felt a little bit of pressure but having a home crowd really spurs you on,” said James. “I went quite deep on the first lap and then felt pretty shocking,…

sean kelly still working on new team

Cycling legend Sean Kelly has said he’s working once again on running a Pro Continental or Continental team. The Irishman, a winner of multiple one-day Classics and stage races in the ’80s, was at the helm of the An Post-Chain Reaction team which folded in 2017 after 11 years in the pro peloton. “A Continental or Pro Continental team is something for which we still have some irons in the fire and has been delayed by Brexit,” Kelly said, “This has made it difficult with a lot of sponsors who would have been in the UK, Ireland and Belgium, which has complicated things because everyone has been waiting and waiting and we’ve been waiting forever now to get a decision from some of those potential sponsors.” Riding under a number of guises over…

freeman lawyer seeks release of sutton affidavit

The solicitor acting for former Team Sky and British Cycling doctor Richard Freeman in his misconduct hearing has asked for the General Medical Council (GMC) to exert pressure on the Daily Mail newspaper to release documents that are related to his case. Mary O’Rourke QC says that a signed affidavit from Shane Sutton that is being held by the newspaper could help Freeman’s cause. The document, she says, contains a “number of lies” and inconsistencies with the evidence that former British Cycling head coach Sutton gave to the Departure of Culture, Media and Sport enquiry into the case when he appeared before them. The Daily Mail has acknowledged receipt of the initial request, but O’Rourke has asked the GMC to put more pressure on the paper by issuing an obtaining order. The tribunal,…
