a bowhunting reunion

I have a bad short-term memory. I forget details about appointments and conversations and a lot of other day-to-day stuff. I do, however, have some capacity to recall events from years ago, and some memories are so clear I can drill them down to the day they happened. Like Sept. 23, 1995. That was a bowhunting day I’ll never forget. My boss at the time, Pat Durkin, let me hunt on a property near his home, and that morning he led me in the darkness to a small Loc-On stand he had hung 20 feet up a red oak. The sun was peeking over the horizon when a 9-point buck stepped out of the berry brush and walked 15 steps from my position. I sent an aluminum arrow through the buck’s lungs,…

I just read Bob Bergland’s excellent article, “A Lifetime of Passion” in the February issue of Deer & Deer Hunting. My mother-in-law bagged three deer in 2016 at the age of 86. She still hunts from her hunting platform if it’s not too cold. She’s also looking forward to hunting this year when she will be 90. By the way, she uses a high-powered rifle. —Bruce Walters, North Carolina I just finished reading my copy of the February issue of Deer & Deer Hunting, and I have to give you five stars for the back page article, “A Lifetime of Passion.” I am 78 years old and also a lifetime hunter, and yes, another female. I bagged my 34th deer (only two have been does) this past season during our muzzleloader season. I…

whitetail longevity

White-tailed deer often live for more than 20 years when raised in captivity. But it’s a different story in the wild. Worn teeth, arthritis and general body deterioration eventually hinder a deer’s ability to feed and evade predators. Any wild deer in excess of 10 years old can be considered an “old deer.” The oldest free-ranging whitetail reported in scientific literature is a 20-year-old doe from New York. However, Leonard Lee Rue III, in his 1989 book, “The Deer of North America,” notes that two ear-tagged Alabama does were killed by hunters when they were 21 and 23 years old. I became especially interested in old does when I captured an old ear-tagged doe in Upper Michigan’s Petrel Grade deer yard in 1969. Upon checking deer tagging records at the nearby Cusino…

I reside and obsessively bowhunt whitetails in the big-woods mountains of northern Idaho. Due to rough-and-tumble terrain, low seasonal logging traffic when things turn wet — unlike properties with consistent, desensitizing farm/ranch, oil-field or wind-turbine-maintenance activity — and roads with various vehicle restrictions, accessing tree-stands often involves considerable hikes. Even on my few private-land spots, after serious rains or snows arrive (turning ranch roads muddy and erosion prone) I’m typically limited on how close I can drive a truck or ATV near stands. Walking a couple miles to reach a hot stand site in the heat of the rut isn’t out of the question — not exactly ideal while wearing heavily insulated clothing required to survive all-day sits. When I discovered electric mountain bikes (more commonly known as e-bikes today) I…
