COMMUNITY SERVICE Nothing about this whitetail adventure seemed normal. It was late March, and the weather was suited more for chasing turkeys than deer. Even more strange, my ambush location was within sight of homes, a road and municipal buildings. Yep, you guessed it, I was on an urban bowhunt. As commonplace as these types of hunts are these days, you don’t need to be that gray in the beard to remember a time when such hunts were unheard of. I once wrote an article for D&DH back in those early days when the Archery Trade Association was first formulating recommendations for urban bowhunts. Back then, the common line heard from the general public was similar to this comment from a Little Rock, Arkansas, resident who opposed a newly proposed urban hunt: “I…

A while back, you asked your readers to provide insights on the most ridiculous deer hunting laws in their states. Mike Austin of Virginia wrote, “Running deer dogs.” This needs more elaboration. He did not mention the ridiculous “right to retrieve” law. This is a 1950s-era law that violates the property rights of rural Virginia landowners. I know, because I am a rural Virginia landowner! To my knowledge, Virginia is one of only two states where a right-toretrieve law exists. Section 18.2-136 of the Code of Virginia decriminalizes trespass related to hunting dog retrieval. This law allows any person to access privately owned property (posted or not) WITHOUT the landowner’s permission at any time with little (if any) liability to retrieve their hunting dog(s). Even worse, liability insurance is the landowner’s responsibility! As…

a cure for cwd? dr.frank o.bastian speaks out

It is possible to eradicate chronic wasting disease (CWD) — at least on some levels — in white-tailed deer. Bacteria, not prions, are present in all transmissible spongiform encephalopathy diseases. And, perhaps most shocking, up to 15 percent of all Alzheimer’s disease deaths might be misclassified cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Those are three bold statements made recently by disease researcher Dr. Frank O. Bastian, and he is standing by them. For decades, research into the prion theory — that TSE diseases are caused by a “mis-folded protein” — has been heavily funded, but has shown little results in terms of a cure or even the mitigation of CWD. Enter Dr. Bastian. The researcher most known for his work at the Louisiana State University Ag Center has been conducting research on a…
