I’m not sure why so many photographers are so hesitant to incorporate lighting into their shoots. Sure, understanding things like watt/seconds and flash duration can be intimidating, at first, and all the various modifiers make it seem like you need a master’s degree just to light someone’s face. But all lighting, be it continuous or strobe, is really simple at its core purpose and function—getting better illumination for a subject.Despite differences in gear, once you’ve understood the basics of lighting, you can pick up any strobe and continuous light anywhere, and use it to improve a scene, just like if you understand the fundamentals of photography, you can pick up any brand of camera and take good pictures. Studio lighting, both flash and continuous, tends to be larger with separate power sources, it’s less portable and, often, it’s more expensive.
