how does fashion influence you?

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS about the biannual fashion shows (apart from the snacks – of which, shock horror, there are many) is seeing the machinations of an entire industry at work. Not just designers, but stylists, writers, harried publicists, exhausted set designers, manicurists, kind-eyed drivers, the person who checks the room’s temperature, lovely interns… you get the idea. The 3O-odd days that span New York, London, Milan and Paris are a masterclass, not just in great clothes but in how to create influence. “AT ITS HEART, IT’S ABOUTTHE NEW AND THE NEXT. the other woman

we met in the first week of university. Sam* was the most beautiful boy I’d ever seen. He was studying maths, had grown up in a remote cottage with hippy parents and no electricity and wore a silver hoop in his left ear. I was a self-conscious London girl with a teacher mother, an alcoholic father and a penchant for wearing skirts over trousers. Within seconds of seeing him on my second night out, I turned to my friend and said: ‘He’s going to be my boyfriend.’ She laughed and said he was gay; he was too pretty and well-dressed not to be. Taking advantage of the nepotistic quality of Hollywood was not something I wanted to be a part of,’ says the 21-year-old. Eventually, it was unavoidable: ‘Acting was the thing I loved most in the world, so any superficial reason not to do it seemed like not a very good reason at all.’ Hawke is calling from the Catskill Mountains in New York, where she’s been in lockdown in her parents’ houses with her siblings since the pandemic hit…

Unlikely icon... MAJESTIC MATCHING Don’t let anyone tell you that twinning is twee – and neither is tripleting, nor quadrupling, or whatever comes beyond that. Ladylike matching is very much in vogue, with the Queen and Thunderbirds’ Lady Penelope as the season’s prim pin-ups. Time to embrace coordinated bags, shoes, gloves and whatever else you can lay your hands on.
