RECENTLY, MY SIX-YEAR-OLD NIECE, Lorna, who lives in southwest Ireland, lost her first tooth. She told me all about it on FaceTime, proudly pulling her lip out to show me the gap and holding up the pearly white nub that she was going to tuck under her pillow that night. “I asked the tooth fairy for more than the going rate of two euros a tooth,” she said. This was right before the midterm elections here in the U.S., when everyone seemed pretty uncertain about the future. But at that moment I felt nothing but optimism—she’s only six years old, and she’s already negotiating for better pay. (She got three euros, she happily reported back.)
