SUZANNE SHARP | Designer Suzanne founded The Rug Company with her husband Christopher in 1997. After four years in Saudi Arabia, they returned home laden with rugs she had sourced from souks, and so began regular trips to Nepal, India and China for carpet production. Travel, she says, ‘always revives the imagination’ and her designs are often inspired by things she has seen. Over the years, Suzanne has worked with designers such as Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood and Tom Dixon and now runs her own creative studio. Featured in this issue is the house she decorated for her friend Annabel White (pages 76-85). We are now a month into lockdown, with no clear end in sight as I write and no idea where we shall be when this magazine hits the newsstands and iPads. Like everyone, the team at House & Garden has had to be quick thinking and hard working to adjust to new norms and provide our audience with the advice, support, entertainment and escapism we all crave. After a period of adapting to working remotely, grasping how to produce a magazine entirely from home and learning to do almost anything over Zoom, we have been thinking creatively to bring all that we usually do to our readers – and more where we can. My team has been endlessly imaginative and pulled out all stops to ensure the House & Garden website…

When the Sladetrained artist Adam Ellis met the hotelier and interior designer Olga Polizzi, he did not realise it would be the beginning of a new career. ‘I had spent over 10 years painting large, abstract pieces, but it was difficult to sell the work,’ he says. In 2005 he branched into wallpapers, bespoke art and site-specific installations. His first commission from Olga saw him working with framer Richard Connolly to create artwork based on antique prints for Brown’s Hotel, W1, and also for The Balmoral hotel in Edinburgh. ‘It was a breath of fresh air compared to painting,’ Adam recalls. ‘Rather than staring at a blank canvas, I had a brief.
