gathering string is how journalists refer to the act of jotting down disparate, nonrelevant ideas. My own Notes app is full of “strings”—notions that might strike me at the time, but with no real project yet in mind. I’d bet your screenshots, bulletin boards, or folders of tear sheets are similar. In my notes from the past year, however, a clear theme surfaced: Our homes have untapped potential to nourish us. So I developed the idea further. The products and stories I gathered pointed toward the idea that our homes can inspire and support our healthy habits, from eating well to finding stillness—that our homes can make us whole. Thus, the Whole Home Project was born. And while we were publishing our yearlong series of special reports, a team in Atlanta…

away cofounder jen rubio

Like most frequent travelers, Jen Rubio has had some baggage-related nearmeltdowns. After her suitcase broke again in the middle of the Zurich airport, instead of simply grousing about it on Twitter, she vowed, Never again! and teamed up with friend and former Warby Parker colleague Steph Korey to launch Away, a thoughtfully designed luggage brand. “It always seemed crazy to me that travel is such an emotional experience, but the suitcase you bring is an afterthought,” says Rubio, now chief brand officer. “It should be exciting!” Away’s signature pieces boast plenty of smart details—integrated USB chargers, compression panels, nesting cases for easy storage—but it’s the evocative colors that keep customers coming back. Along with core neutrals, Away regularly rolls out limited-edition, travel-inspired colorways: Think Stockholm-esque dusty shades (designed with Rashida Jones)…

setting the tone: the 2019 paint forecast

While some of us are still trying to work the latest It hue into our homes, a cabal of color experts have already wrapped up their lead colors for next year. Their message: We all need a little cocooning. “People want a break from the chaos and noise out there,” says Benjamin Moore creative director Ellen O’Neill, who selected Metropolitan, a contemplative, light-shifting gray, as the brand’s 2019 Color of the Year. Earthy, warm tones—like Sherwin-Williams Cavern Clay and Dunn-Edwards Spice of Life—seem bold at first glance, but they’re known for a similarly soothing effect. “Painted on the walls, it’s like an embrace,” says Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams’s director of color marketing. And with tech-saturated consumers struggling to stay rooted, expect plenty of organic inspiration. Behr Blueprint evokes a calm sea…

terry chic

After an ill-fated trip to buy towels left longtime pals Lindsey Johnson and Liz Eichholtz feeling less than impressed, the pair felt it was time for terry to get the disrupter treatment. The result: Weezie, a new line offering a modern spin on classic white towels (think ultra-soft organic cotton, Japanese weaving technology, and loops for drying). Our favorite part? The luxe piped edging and monograms, in hues that can be mixed and matched for a custom touch. From $20 for two washcloths to $78 for a bath sheet. weezietowels.com Leaf Turner From Darroch and Michael Putnam, the designer-adored master florists behind New York’s Putnam & Putnam, Flower Color Guide ($35) is a ridiculously enjoyable pintsized book full of blooms familiar and exotic, all arranged by hue. phaidon.com Prime Time Jonathan Adler sums up…

new hue, new you

SUPER WHITE OC-152 BENJAMIN MOORE “Nothing does a better job of freshening up a space than a crisp, bright white. For clients on Long Island, we used it to coat every surface: floors, walls, millwork, even furniture. It instantly diluted any clutter and made the objects in each room look bolder by contrast.” DAN MAZZARINI HAWTHORNE YELLOW HC-4 BENJAMIN MOORE “A homeowner on the cusp of a milestone birthday felt that her living room no longer reflected her lifestyle—it was fussy and uncomfortable. So down came the dated wallpaper and up went this warm, embracing yellow, which immediately opened up the dark room. She loves how it’s totally her: vibrant, happy, and confident!” KEITH CARROLL CYPRESS 710 C2 PAINT “After going through a breakup, my client decided it was time to try things she had often thought about but never…
