welcome

The Land Rover seen the world over Land Rover dominated the news in early April, when it was announced that Prince Philip would make his final journey in one. He had been quoted as saying: ‘Just stick me in the back of a Land Rover and drive me to Windsor’ – and that is essentially what happened. He had not only planned the funeral, but also had input into designing his hearse (see p18). There was plenty of mainstream media attention about the vehicle – and I was even called to discuss Land Rovers on a drivetime radio show. Clearly, no one I know listens to that station because I didn’t get any friends saying: ‘Hey, you’re on the radio!’ Mind you, the presenter getting my surname wrong (Patterson…!) probably didn’t help. Is…

JOHN DEAN CONTRIBUTOR • The same problems clearly afflict Land Rover owners across the world. Just ask Tasmanian John, who’s been wrestling with Range Rover Classic springs – p98. RUSS BROWN CLUBS EDITOR • Russ has recently moved home and immediately joined his local club in his adopted county for some off-road motorsport (p20). He’s also tweaked his Defender (p101). VICKY TURNER COLUMNIST • Should we be trying to encourage more people to become enthusiasts? asks Vicky in her column (p33). Maybe, but not everyone may want to become one. MIKE GOULD CONTRIBUTOR • Mike got to play with the big toys when he went to check out the Series I breakdown vehicle that looked after Midland Red buses (p70).…

making a great discovery

It’s a crisp but bright spring morning at Frickley 4×4 Off-road Centre’s massive 75-acre site in West Yorkshire. While I’m waiting for Paddy Turner to arrive in his smartly modified Discovery 3, site owner Malc Cooke points out some likely areas to test the Disco’s mettle. It’s months since I’ve been for a play in the mud, so I’m looking forward to seeing what Paddy and his D3 can do. I don’t have long to wait. His gleaming Tonga Green 2005 Discovery 3 is very different from his first 4×4; his much-loved Daihatsu Fourtrak, but why the change? ‘It’s an itch you’ve got to scratch,’ says Paddy. ‘Many of my friends had Land Rovers. A few of them are into their Series too. I thought I just had to have a…

defender: philip’s 16-year project

The hearse of Prince Philip became the world’s most viewed Land Rover as it fulfilled its singular destiny at Windsor Castle on 17 April. More than 13 million people in the UK watched live as the Defender 130 was driven in low range at a sedate walking pace by 29-year-old Corporal Louis Murray, a vehicle mechanic from 8 Training Battalion REME. Beginning in the castle’s quadrangle, the journey ended at St George’s Chapel where the funeral took place. Customising the 2003 Td5 Defender 130 truck cab – one of two built – had been a 16-year project for the Duke of Edinburgh, with its low-key military theme reflecting his Royal Navy career. The paint is Deep Bronze Green, a discreet, traditional shade used on some MoD Defenders and on other older Land Rovers…
