beauty’s new mood

Throughout my teens and early twenties – to be honest, for most of my life – I hated my nose. I didn’t believe that it was the pretty, pert nose that belongs on my face. Mine is big with a hook, and I was told that with age it would get even longer and more hooked. I hated all angles of my very small face, but especially my profile. Then I met the man with whom I’ve spent more years than any other: my hairstylist. The wonderful Neil Starr told me very early on in our relationship – in fact, at my very first visit to his funky, pink salon – that I have a beautiful nose. ‘Look at that profile,’ he said. ‘It is beautiful!’ I’ve remained faithful to him…

JUANA PARATHYRAS, BEAUTY DIRECTOR ‘Someone once told me: “Give a woman the right lipstick and she can conquer the world.” That’s what I love most about beauty – its ability to give you confidence in who you are. A beauty product should never define you; it should just give you that little push you sometimes need to step out into the world.’ NCUMISA MAHKONJWA, BEAUTY EDITOR ‘To me, beauty means being confident in yourself and embracing your “imperfections”. As an accident-prone child, I collected a few scars on my legs and one on my face. They made me very insecure and it took years for me to be okay with them. Now I think they make me interesting and I’ve come to enjoy retelling the stories of how I got them.’ PHOTOGRAPHS IMAXTREE, STEVE…

‘Zest is the secret of all beauty,’ Christian Dior famously posited. Had he been among the crowd packed into Paris’ Musée Rodin last autumn to watch his house’s new artistic director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, debut her first collection, no doubt he would have been pleased. As Beyoncé’s power anthem ‘Flawless’ pumped in the background, a parade of tulle skirts, quilted fencing jackets, spaghetti-strap gowns and slogan tees (emblazoned with messages like ‘dio(r)evolution’ and ‘we should all be feminists’ – a nod to the viral 2013 TEDx talk by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who sat in the front row) made their way down the runway. Maria played with house codes like side-buttoned bar jackets, full skirts and scalloped trim, but she turned an eye towards younger generations by mixing in streetwear…
