Marie Claire South Africa is an iconic, trendsetting title for discerning, fashion-conscious women. It's a brand of depth and substance and offers a journalistic angle on issues not covered by other fashion magazines. Marie Claire is for multifaceted women with a shared mind-set: they are curious about the world and empathize with other women, and their interests range from social issues to fashion trends. The brand provides content not found anywhere else in South Africa: dynamic, picture-led reportage, real women’s stories, critical reporting and sophisticated fashion and beauty across age categories. brand director’s note

‘A piece of jewellery is like the dot on an i. It completes the silhouette, extends the personality, captures the essence of a woman. It is precious and inimitable. And it often starts with love…’ Recently, Associated Media Publishing founder Jane Raphaely sent me an article written by Susie Orbach for The Guardian. The celebrated British psychotherapist, psychoanalyst, writer and social critic is the author of the 1978 book Fat is a Feminist Issue. In the article, Susie reminisces about the urge she felt when writing the book to challenge ‘the homogeneity of what constituted beauty’, focusing on issues around eating and food used as a soothing balm for our aching souls. It was 40 years ago, and it seemed that, for a moment, she says, ‘we stopped worrying and dared…

a charmed life

As a child, precious stones fascinated South African-Italian designer Ambra. She’d collect them wherever she could: a scratch patch, her mother’s closet or in nature, and keep them in trays or display them in glass pyramids in her bedroom. This fascination trickled down into dreams of underwater treasures. She began feeling creatively restless; sketching pieces of jewellery in an attempt to ‘work out’ her recurring treasure-like dreams – essentially developing her very first range of jewellery. These days, Central Saint Martins alum Ambra’s collections develop from everyday inspirations – the working woman, a city girl on the move or urban chameleon, someone constantly moving forward. Her latest collection, Clasped by Ambra, reflects what she calls ‘city hardware’ and the bridging of a gap between feminine and edgy – ‘designed for the…

SALT OR SUGAR SCRUB: WHICH TO TRY? The main difference between the two is the size of the exfoliating granules. Salt-scrub granules are generally larger, while sugar exfoliators are finer, meaning they’re less abrasive on the skin. Sugar scrubs are best if you have sensitive skin, and are gentle enough to use on your face. Salt scrubs, on the other hand, are great for buffing thick, rough patches of skin on hard-wearing areas such as elbows, knees and feet. Salt is also an antiseptic that can help kill bacteria and reduce inflammation. PRODUCTS WE SWEAR BY: 1. CHARLOTTE RHYS Natural Salt Scrub R184 is formulated with fragrant natural oils and pure salt crystals that will revive tired skin. 2. WHAT HAS MADE YOU THE STRONG, SUCCESSFUL WOMAN THAT YOU ARE TODAY? Growing up in a township in South Africa that was preparing for its first democratic election was an interesting time for me. My surroundings hardened me, but they also taught me about humanity and the essence of Ubuntu. My womanhood and the values that I hold dear today are a direct influence from my Grandmother as well as my schooling community. HOW HAVE YOU TURNED CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES? Today, I see challenges as opportunities to learn, build and be better. I am of the firm belief that we must live in the present. I never want to miss out on beautiful moments or lose time because I’m too busy being consumed by that which doesn’t feed my soul. It’s like the…
