if you think dark skin can’t burn…

So you’re thinking dark skin doesn’t burn and you can skip sunscreen, right? So wrong. Perhaps darker skin doesn’t burn as easily as fair skin but it is still at risk of skin cancer, premature ageing and hyperpigmentation. I used to be a victim of this myth, but the reality is that melanin (the pigment in skin) doesn’t provide adequate UV protection. Excessive sun exposure causes melanin to overproduce (its natural reaction to protect the skin), leading to darker scars and hyperpigmentation. While there is the concern that dark skin could turn a peculiar shade of grey-blue after applying sunscreen, as well as a heavy, oil-based formula exacerbating an already oily skin, the benefits of wearing it far outweigh the costs. There are fantastic new sunscreens on the market that work…

what’s in your drink?

WINE 107 calories The problem with alcohol is not just its carbohydrate and calorie content. After one drink, resolve tends to go out the door and it’s easier to convince yourself one more (and some snacks) won’t make a difference. The trick is to be intentional about how you plan to drink over the festive season, says Umhlanga professional coach Anita Hamilton-Williams of Banting Buddies. ‘Decide on your drink of choice and how many you’ll allow yourself. If you’re not looking to lose weight, a modest drink here and there shouldn’t make much difference.’ BRANDY 112 calories Avoid shooters and cocktails, which have high sugar content, says Suna Kassiers, a dietitian at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Stick to dry wine, red or white (about 107 calories a glass), unflavoured gin, vodka, brandy or whisky (112…

What impact do you think ShondaLand has had on pop culture? The ShondaLand television production company, and Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in particular, is crawling with women. This alone does important work to represent the world as it is. But more than that, it is a world in which women who are dynamic and complex are the rule and not the exception. And we hear their stories in full. What’s it like working with Shonda Rhimes? The first thing that comes to mind when I think about working with Shonda is ‘fun’. Both Clare Tucker (my character in The Fixer) and Dr Maggie Pierce on Grey’s Anatomy have been two of the most exciting characters I have had the privilege of playing. Do you any added responsibility being a black actor? I think it is…

living the american dream

LEOPARD PRINT, HILARIOUS PUT-DOWNS, catfights and an attitude that got the world talking… TV has never seen a character quite like Cookie Lyon. As the outrageous star of the soapie-meetsmusical drama Empire, the role shot actor Taraji Penda Henson into the limelight. The show has more than 17 million viewers in the US and the season one finale in March 2015 set Twitter alight with more than two million tweets in two hours. Taraji herself has almost four million followers on Twitter, and Cookie’s potty-mouthed quotes are transformed by fans into instantly viral memes. ‘They see her heart,’ says Taraji. ‘They see her intentions. And they love her style.’ Taraji stars as the scheming ex-con, ex-wife of hip-hop mogul Lucious Lyon (played by Terrence Howard), who must choose between his…
