any excuse for a party

I always think of December the same way I think of the youngest kid in a big family. If January is the eldest – responsible, sensible and obedient – then December is its counterpoint: rebellious and refuses to take conventional wisdom to heart, insistent on having that much more fun and breaking all the rules while at it. This was certainly the case in my own family. With only about four weeks left until the end of the year, the general consensus is to make the most of them, and squeeze as much fun from these early summer days as possible. The summer spirit certainly rubbed off on our fashion team, who curated stunning stories that will make dressing for all your upcoming parties an effortless task (p75). In the same vein,…

women of the year

AMAL CLOONEY International human rights lawyer Amal stepped into the Hollywood spotlight when she married George Clooney in 2014. Since then, she’s captured the world’s attention as a celebrity wife and mother, gracing red-carpet events and magazine covers. But far less focus is given to the incredible work she does. For the past year, Amal has tirelessly fought for the Yazidi people, seeking justice for the war crimes that have been committed against them by the Islamic State (IS). She has worked closely with Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman who was kidnapped into sex slavery by IS, but managed to escape. Together they made history at the United Nations, advocating for world leaders to bring IS leaders to justice. Subsequently, in September this year, the UN Security Council mobilised investigative teams…

let’s go to the beach

Before launching BeachCult, Joanna Hedley studied politics, philosophy and economics at the University of Cape Town, followed by two years of worldwide travelling. Her idea for BeachCult sparked when she was in Goa, India, where she bought a suitcase full of fabrics and silk kaftans, brought it back to Cape Town and started designing and selling resort wear. It took off immediately. ‘I’m a complete travel addict and I am consumed by wanderlust daily,’ says Joanna. She worked on her resort-wear line for another two years, but was still unsure of the direction her business was headed, which lead her to an MBA in fashion and luxury business. She believes this helped her to refine her brand – although still specialising in swimwear, the focus changed to signature prints designed by artists…

mermaid hair, do care

GET THE LOOK I-woke-up-like-this hair is a hallmark of effortless summer style. Unfortunately, mermaid waves take a little more work than a quick dip in the ocean. The trick is choosing the right product to make sure your style lasts, without seeming too ‘done’. Opt for a light mousse or curl cream and apply sparingly to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. If your hair is dead-straight, use a curling iron to tong it roughly in sections first, then tease it out with your fingers to create a messy look. You could also twist it into knots while damp, then untie when dry for (almost) effortless waves. PHOTOGRAPHS IMAXTREE, ANDRÉ WEPENER/PIXEL LOUNGE, ISTOCK…
