aspasia on… the writing on the wall

I FOUND MYSELF IN a public toilet, as one does. I looked up and the door was covered in old-school etched graffiti. I tried to quickly avert my eyes, not wanting my brain polluted by what I presumed would be an appalling set of solicitations for drugs and sex, or just really mean statements about some hapless victim of toilet-door bullying. Predictably, I could not help it and curiosity got the better of me. I ended up looking at the door. What I saw was not the depressing underbelly of life, but an entire door dedicated to Jesus. It was proselytising on steroids. There were biblical texts, statements of love and hope, plus general do-goodness. Not a single mean thing on the entire door. Plus one statement of self-love –…

check yourself

RULE 1 Completely update the checked suit with a rock’n’roll tee and a pair of platform lace-ups for extra cool points. RULE 2 You can rewear your old checked sweater with simple, basic pieces in neutral tones. Accessorize with belts and sunglasses for a modern take. RULE 3 Since check can be a bit busy, keep your hair and make-up unfussed and undone. A pair of oversized sunglasses will keep the look polished. RULE 4 Gingham shouts summer picnic – go with the flow in a light cotton dress paired with this season’s laid-back sneakers. RULE 5 Bring colour back to your check – a bright, bold pop can refresh a look immediately.…

60s pop

I get the ‘no make-up’ thing happening in beauty right now, and I love it. But I’m also struggling to ignore the super-bright colours popping up everywhere. Our beauty team has figured out the perfect balance between the two schools: the 60s pop art era, with its easy aesthetic of clean lines, mixed with bold colours – think Roy Lichtenstein. It’s all very wearable and doable. Start with clean, unmasked skin and that just-ran-up-a-hill flush on the cheeks. Keep brows brushed-up yet groomed and ditch the eyeshadows and liners for totally naked eyes (OK, maybe a slick of mascara then). Bring in the colour last, choosing the boldest red or orange you can find, and make sure your lines are maths-accurate – using a lip liner is always a good…

how to master the art of the brow

STEP 1 GROW YOUR BROWS 01. Not so long ago, eyebrows were just an afterthought – nothing to be too concerned about and probably only given attention when you felt the need to pluck (or over-pluck). But beauty houses, make-up artists and brow specialists (yes, they exist!) have discovered that our eyebrows do more than just protect the eyes. They’re now considered face-changers with the ability to enhance eyes and even take off a few years. With all the waxing and threading and tweezing, along with Cara Delevingne envy, it’s difficult to determine what exactly is the best shape for your face (spoiler alert: it’s your natural shape). Most of us have plucked with wild abandon in search of the perfectly defined and groomed shape. But no more! You should leave your brows…

IS BOTOX REALLY THE ANSWER? We all want to look our best, but the possible risks of Botox aren’t for everyone. Botox is a neurotoxin that disrupts the communication signals between neurons and muscles, resulting in temporary paralysis. It’s a preventative measure but it doesn’t erase already formed lines and it doesn’t help the skin recover collagen and elastin – the lack of which is the cause of wrinkles and sagging in the first place. Milena Popovic from Medinova Beauty Centre in Johannesburg says there are a number of non-invasive procedures that stimulate the production of collagen. Some can even work in collaboration with Botox to enhance or prolong its results, but many people are becoming selective about using Botox, especially with a more natural look becoming increasingly popular. TREATMENTS TO TRY Not…
