A mix of emotions greeted me as I entered the SEC to attend Model Rail Scotland in late February, just days before this issue closed for press. It marked exactly two years since my last attendance at a model show, at this same venue, in which time I’ve seldom strayed very far from home. There was a definite hint of ‘Groundhog Day’ about the whole thing, not least as I bumped into the same person within seconds of entering, as I had in 2020. For a moment, I did wonder if the last two years had really happened... Aside from that momentary discombobulation, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Following the success of the Wainwright ‘D’ Class in 2021, Rails of Sheffield has again teamed up with Dapol to produce the SECR/ Southern Maunsell ‘D1’ in ‘OO’. The ‘D1’ was a class of 21 rebuilt ‘D’ Class 4-4-0s, which appeared between 1921-27 and boasted a Belpaire firebox, super-heated boiler and long-travel valves. Employed across the South Eastern Division of the Southern Railway, the class lasted in use with British Railways until 1961. The model will boast the same high specification as the Wainwright ‘D’ Class, with a powerful five-pole motor, all-wheel power collection, easy-access DCC decoder, firebox glow and fully detailed cab interior. We received a bumper pack of new scenic detail kits from Scale Model Scenery this month, including a number of items designed for construction sites, all rendered in laser-cut form. The scaffolding tower kit is surprisingly easy to build, thanks to the supplied jig and features timber floor planks, ladders and a safety gate. Assembly and painting provided a fun lunch hour project. The roof trusses are useful for scratchbuilding structures or stacking beside a half-built house, or even as a lorry load. Rebar reinforcing mesh represents an essential component for structural concrete casting and the parts feature a discernible texture on the upper surfaces, depicting the tightly twisted wire of the real thing.
