As the iron roads spread across the country in the 1800s, it wasn’t long before the railway station became a vital social and economic hub for local communities. Unsurprisingly, stations have also been a firm favourite with modellers over the years. Unless we’re modelling an industrial or purely goods scene, most of us will include some form of station on our layouts. It can provide a natural focal point, as well as injecting plenty of operational interest, as trains come and go, stopping, terminating or whizzing through non-stop. I greatly enjoyed reading Chris Leigh’s feature this month on the ubiquity of parcels traffic during the railway’s heyday (page 36). It conjured up a world far removed from the modern railway.
