“Bonehill’s group were arrested after leaving a fake bomb on an underground train.” THE WHO BRING their symphonic Moving On! tour to Wembley Stadium this month, in advance of their highly-anticipated twelfth album. The distant roots of this latest chapter can be gleaned in these previously unpublished, circa-1962 photographs of Pete Townshend and several of his fellow Ealing art school students on assignment in the streets of west London. Of unknown provenance, the pictures were given to MOJO by ex-Ealing art student Liz Fenn, who rediscovered them years later in a filing cabinet. In one, Townshend waits outside a telephone box in which an upside-down student makes a call; in another, his group feign public unconsciousness. “The students had been told to go out into Ealing and make something happen,” Townshend’s art…
