the seaspiracy effect

Even if you haven’t seen it, you’ve probably heard about it. If Tiger King was one of the most talked-about shows of 2020, Seaspiracy looks set to claim that accolade in 2021 – and it’s proving just as controversial. The 90 minute documentary made it into Netflix’s Top Ten most-watched list within a week of release in late-March, and it’s been the subject of many column inches and heated dinner table conversations since too. Creating awareness Seaspiracy was made by the team behind Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, a 2014 documentary examining the impact of animal agriculture on the environment. Concerned about the amount of plastic washing up on nearby beaches, director Ali Tabrizi leaves his home in Kent and begins a journey across the globe, investigating the cause of this pollution. Along the…

mindful gardening

In modern life we can find ourselves feeling out of touch with the natural environment but, by spending time in a garden, it’s easy to discover a deep connection with life on Earth, and it all starts with the soil just beneath your feet. When you understand what a plant needs to flourish, you can begin to appreciate all the intricacies and connectivity between the Earth and everything around you. This holistic understanding can provide an enormous sense of purpose and appreciation of how everything within the garden is linked – and that includes you. Living in harmony For plants to thrive, we need to get to know what helps them to grow. The foundation of most garden plants is the fascinating mix of broken-down rocks, organic material, living organisms, air, water and…

trash into treasure

Amid the roses and rhododendrons, this year’s Chelsea Flower Show announced the winner of its first ever award for Sustainable Garden Product of the Year. The winner was a range of brightly coloured plant pots made from discarded rope and fishing net. The man behind the idea for ‘Ocean Plant Pots’ is Ally Mitchell, and the products are the result of his determination to tackle the harmful impact of waste in our seas, by turning it into something new. The award serves to demonstrate a growing recognition of the importance of his mission. In fact, his project couldn’t be more vital, as the dilemma of finding new ways to tackle the waste crisis becomes ever more pressing. The latest figures show that UK households produced around 27 million tonnes of waste…

a summer’s day guide to foraging

The sun is shining, a warm breeze sweeps across a field and my nose is on high alert for the sweet smell of luscious blooms. It’s my favourite time of year – summer. While many are excited about sunbathing, barbequing, and swimming, there’s something I look forward to even more – foraging. Foraging is the gathering of plants from their wild habitat, which are then typically used for food, medicine, or self-care and beauty products. For me, foraging is more than merely gathering wild edibles and natural medicinals. It’s a way to strengthen one’s physical, emotional, and spiritual connection with Mother Nature and her natural cycles. We can forage all year round, but all my favourite medicinal herbs are in full force during the summer season. Free plant medicine for all! “Foraging is…

the power of saying ‘no’

We are offered so many items that are destined straight for the bin. I mean, let’s face it… have you ever used a food shop receipt for anything? Just by asking not to have a straw, declining a carrier bag or requesting your receipt to be emailed instead, we’re reducing the amount of waste we produce and our environmental impact on a daily basis. The best bit is it’s easy, free and is something you can start doing right now! When I’m out and about, I always ask ‘Can I have that coffee in my reusable mug?’, ‘Would it be OK to have that beer in my reusable pint glass?’, ‘Do you offer a refill service?’, or ‘Would you be able to just pop it straight into my tub to avoid the…
