As Ghostface repeatedly asked, “What’s your favourite scary movie?” When asked that question myself – thankfully not by masked maniacs – I usually reply, “Showgirls.” Joking aside (what’s not to love about Showgirls, after all?) it would be the Nightmare On Elm Street series. As a teenager I was obsessed with them. I didn’t really see it as “horror”, I saw it as a battle between good and evil – the same as Doctor Who, which had captured my imagination for as long as I could remember. It’s fair to say that I’ve always been more interested in the more “fantastical” elements of horror and scary stories – brutality has never been appealing, but Zsa Zsa Gabor getting sliced by a supernatural dream-stalker on a late-night talk show is, seemingly,…

the banana splits movie

THE GANG ARE BACK! 1 Bingo, Fleegle, Drooper and Snorky return in a brandnew original movie from Blue Ribbon Content – Warner Bros Television Group’s digital studio – to be released on DVD, Blu-ray and a television debut on Syfy. But this isn’t like any Banana Splits adventure you’ve seen before – the film has been rated R for horror, violence and gore. REWRITING HISTORY 2 The Banana Splits Adventure Hour – a kids show mixing live action and cartoons – was produced by Hanna-Barbera and ran for two seasons from 1968 to 1970. (There was a short-lived revival in 2008.) This is the first time a Banana Splits on-screen adventure has been solely aimed at adults, although the group had a crossover with Suicide Squad in a 2017 DC Comics limited series. BIRTHDAY…

breanna teintze

Who’s your protagonist? Corcoran Gray is an anxious 26-year-old outlaw wizard who desperately wants to do the right thing, but who’s so very bad at people. This is the story of how he (awkwardly) attempts to save his family, and (accidentally) the world. How does magic work in this world? You write the spell down, then pronounce it – with the catch that magic is toxic, so every time you cast it hurts, and casting too much will kill you. I like magic to have a cost. If it didn’t, I’m so lazy I think I would use it for everything! Did you need to do much research? Believe it or not the most intense research involved caves. I learned that there are many in real life that humans can’t enter because they’re too acidic. How…

return of the titans

To mark what would have been Ray Harryhausen’s 99th birthday and the start of his 100th centenary year, the National Galleries have been given unprecedented access to his archive. As part of the celebrations, several of his iconic models have been restored, including work from Jason And The Argonauts, Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger and Clash Of The Titans. A new show, Ray Harryhausen: Titan Of Cinema, will open at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in May 2020, and will include the models, as well as newly restored and previously unseen material from the Harryhausen collection.…

dance macabre

Just as James Bond has a habit of doing every couple of years, British secret agent Christopher Winter has returned. 007, however, never had to deal with demons or black magic. Or repressed memories of a sinister former life he knew nothing about… Two years have passed since the events of the 1963-set The War In The Dark, the debut novel from SFX editor-at-large Nick Setchfield. Winter is now working in London’s criminal underworld, yet the author says the man we meet in The Spider Dance is fundamentally the same guy. “He’s just evolving,” Setchfield tells Red Alert. “Now he knows there’s powerful and potentially dangerous magic in the world and in his past. That intrigues him but his curiosity makes him vulnerable.” While Setchfield teases that “events embedded in Winter’s own history”…
