TO SEEK OUT and showcase exceptional spaces, decor and design is what we love to do at Simply You Living. It’s something that’s proving to be ever more exciting as Kiwis increasingly want their homes to reflect their individual style. Part of that individuality is the art they choose to display as well as their own concept of luxury – whether it’s a designer chair, luxe linen or simply having the space to entertain indoors or out. Our featured houses encompass all these things and each owner has curated a personal take on modern luxury that is also very liveable. Likewise, the three Style File properties (page 78) may be small but all of the women have lovingly pieced together collections of art and objets that reflect their creativity and…

Shape shifter The new Prado sofa from Ligne Roset has taken luxury sofa design to new heights. The versatile sofa consists of a large bench seat that can be adjusted as desired with back cushions placed at will, so you can sit or lie depending on how you feel. The weighted cushions are equipped with a non-slip system, so they do not need to rest against anything else for support. The main bench doubles as an occasional bed and a simple flip of the seat cushion exposes a side covered with mattress fabric. The options are endless. domo.co.nz Light years away Denmark is renowned for producing iconic furniture and lighting and the demand for this minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic is as strong as ever. Nestled among the art galleries and jewellers on Parnell Rd in Auckland is a hair salon that is giving customers a very stylish experience indeed. Opened in July by husband and wife team Stephen and Andrea Cockle, ASC Salon is split across two distinct levels. A veiled entry leads into the ground floor of the salon, which is designated for cutting and styling, while upstairs is a comfortable lounge area for those undergoing lengthy treatments, complete with a coffee machine and a bar stocked with wine and beer. The couple worked with Auckland-based design practice Material Creative for the interior fitout. “The brief was an industrial aesthetic, while still being warm and inviting,” explains director Toni Brandso. “They wanted a space that would be unexpectedly cool in the heart of the…

Creating a restaurant that has character in a goldfish bowl commercial building was a challenge the team from Aucklandbased design practice Ctrl Space relished. With bars and cafes like Glass Goose, Citizen Park and Kokako under their belt, the company has garnered a reputation for designing awardwinning hospitality spaces. So when the owners of the newly opened Kindred tasked them with designing an eatery that felt like an extension of their home, a “cosy shelter”, in the space beneath ASB bank in Britomart they gave it a major makeover. The tiles on the floor were stripped back and a grinder taken to the concrete before it was sealed, giving it a natural look. Ctrl Space owner and director Chris Stevens says the tactile effect was important in the overall concept so…

The burgeoning design quarter in Auckland’s Newmarket shopping district has a hip new resident. Australian skincare brand Aesop has taken over a corner site on Osborne St and is enticing customers not only with its fragrant products and iconic apothecary-style bottles, but also the unique design of its retail space. Renowned for giving customers an immersive in-store experience, the brand takes an individualistic approach to the design of each store in order to achieve a space that relates to its location as well as representing its brand values. For the Newmarket site, Aesop chose to work with Aucklandbased architecture firm Pattersons, which aimed to “create a neighbourhood store that felt like it belonged in New Zealand”. Taking a celebration of the domestic ritual of washing as the theme, the designers opted…
