Vintage Rock

Vintage Rock Jul/Aug 2019

VINTAGE ROCK celebrates a time when music changed the world - 45s, youth culture and the odd thrusting pelvis. Vintage Rock chronicles all the stellar artists and music, the enduring legacy of those early pioneers - and why it’s still the best way to live. Spanning the dawn of the 50s to early Beatles (pre Eastern mysticism!), Vintage Rock covers a time of Mods and Rockers, crinoline skirts and blue jeans, rock star movies and screaming-girl concerts. This special magazine rejoices in the music and verve of Elvis, The Shadows, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent and a host more, and speaks to a contemporary audience that relishes the vitality and flair of the era.

When Stray Cats first made their indelible mark, they had it all. That magic number of three achingly cool, rakish twenty-somethings, heavily armed with an arsenal of rockabilly, as raw as it was accessible. What’s more, niftily side-stepping the retro clichés, they recast the sound for a new generation of hungry adolescents. When the hard-slapping incendiary snarl of debut 45 Runaway Boys clawed its way into the Top 10, it was the sorest of thumbs, amidst a mainstream landscape of Abba, Spandau Ballet… and school kids singing There’s No One Quite Like Grandma. In short, with the punk insurgency now watered-down for the high street, Stray Cats were a much-needed pocket of rebellion. Of course, like all proper bands, they rose, they fell – and then they fell out. But now, 40…

rockabilly summer

We were spoilt for choice at Viva Las Vegas, we rocked our socks off at Hemsby, and the Nashville Boogie was cooking as always – but it need not stop there. Those with a penchant for rock’n’roll in the sun (isn’t that everyone?) can fill their boots this summer with a many-splendoured menu to keep us strolling, bopping and swinging throughout. The summer season kicks off in fine fettle with Wildest Cats Summer Car Cruise, lighting up Lowestoft with a fine array of classic cars, hot-rods, bikes and trikes (7 July), before the 12th Shakedown Rock’n’Roll Weekender arrives in Dursley with acts including Germany’s Smoke Stack Lightnin’, Paul Ansell’s Number Nine, Michael Roach’s Mississippi Blues Band and all the usual accoutrements (18-21 July, shakedownrocknroll.co.uk). This is followed by more Wildest…

billy adams

“Billy Adams was the son of a coal miner and grew up on a musical diet of the Grand Ole Opry and Bill Monroe, and used to ‘strum a bucket like a guitar’” Rockabilly Hall Of Famer and pioneer Billy Adams has died aged 79. Born in Redbush, Kentucky, Billy Adams was the son of a coal miner and one of a large family of 14 children. He grew up on a musical diet of the Grand Ole Opry and Bill Monroe, and used to “strum a bucket like a guitar”. In the late 50s Adams put out some classic rockabilly sides including You Heard Me Knocking, You Gotta Have A Duck Tail, Return Of The All American Boy, True Love Will Come Your Way and his most famous song, 1957’s…

the deadshots

Take a tool-maker, a factory worker, a music teacher and a bin man, and what do you get? As they keep being told: a very disparate band that no one would have put together. But from such polar opposites musical alchemy is made. Three years ago, main songsmith, lead guitarist and our interviewee Billy Jenkinson, founded the group while still at school. “After messing about and playing Wipeout over and over, things began to happen,” he says. Three years on, they’ve honed their craft, and got snapped up by Western Star Records. Their first album, Wanted, came out in January. The title’s easily justified – The DeadShots are now in demand on the rocking gig and festival circuit. What do you consider makes you distinct in terms of your sound? As a…
