William Abranowicz PHOTOGRAPHER The illustrious photographer captured Tommy Hilfiger’s exuberant beachside home in Miami exclusively for Vogue Living this issue (page 88). Stepping behind the lens since his teens, Abranowicz started his career after trusting his instincts and leaving an economics degree for art school and photography. “Through my work I have engaged with the world of books and magazines, photographing a wide range of topics in design, travel and social issues,” he says. Based in Bedford, NY, Abranowicz is constantly inspired by the changing nature of his job — “every day is a new one and you get to do the whole thing over and over and over. I love that.” His fifth monograph, This Far No Further, Photographs Inspired by the Voting Rights Movement, will by published in 2020. @wabranowicz…

editor’s letter

I recently had the pleasure of meeting our cover stars Tommy Hilfiger and Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger at a cocktail event aboard a fabulous yacht cruising Sydney Harbour. The couple were charming and playful as we relaxed in the sunshine, with the eventual sunset serving as a fitting backdrop to a wonderful afternoon. It was a brilliant way to start the summer festive season. Mr and Mrs Hilfiger kindly invited Vogue Living into their incredible art-filled, modernist mansion (page 88) in Miami, and it’s a cover home that embodies the spirit of this special holiday issue with its celebration of bright summer style, impeccable design and awe-inspiring art. Back on Australian shores, our rich and diverse design landscape continues to inspire and VL has once again partnered with Alessi for the prestigious Alessi…

art and soul

What role does art play in the home? It plays no role unless you assign it one: to memorialise a face or a place, to semaphore success, to offset tax or a damask-covered couch, to console for the endless pressure to acquire, to politicise, to exhilarate, to amuse, to agitate, to reflect, to ruminate, to beautify… Or to serve as a reminder of that over-hyped exhibition where the pinot flowed, the bravura peaked, all reason departed and you purchased a caustically titled bucket and mop and became the patron saint of conceptualism. That is, until a catalogue entry made the work’s intent clear: to clean all idiot art out of contemporary culture. Ah, the gravity of levity when the joke is on you. But hey, Marcel Duchamp changed the entire discourse…
