As I write this, we are in travel limbo: flights are restarting, yet there is still an FCO advisory against travel, and anyone entering the UK is expected to go into quarantine. It’s a surreal time, but thank you for giving us a lift with your kind messages. And if you need a lift, try our fun quizzes on the website. If you don’t already receive our newsletters then I do recommend signing up. It’s been lovely to have so many of you join us in our recent virtual events too. If you’re a subscriber then we give you first access to them (contact us on info@wanderlust.co.uk if you think we don’t have your email address). This issue we’re exploring some of Britain’s best kept secrets (p54) – how many have you experienced?…

For us this issue he focused in on Colombia’s Llanos Orientales (p72). British secret? “The dramatic Cambrian Mountains in mid Wales are wonderful for hiking, camping and stargazing, and are largely free of the crowds that throng the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia.” Jennifer Barclay Q&A: the Dodecanese One of this issue’s many contributors from the Bradt Travel Guides stable, Jennifer lives on the Greek island of Tilos. Timeless castle Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland Photographer: Chris Button A form of Bamburgh Castle has looked out across the Ross Back Sands and North Sea for around 1,500 years, with its latest incarnation standing here since the 11th Century. As we consider our first summer adventures after lockdown, destinations like the wild, historic Northumberland coastline are very much at the forefront of our thoughts (see Secret Britain, p54) – although of course we’ll have to take local sensitivities to travel into account first. But we’ll happily be patient for Bamburgh, which is hoping to reopen in July. Time is very much on its side, after all. © Chris Button / Alamy Stock Photo “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”Marcel Proust, author…

Star letter Grand Galápagos Thank you so much for the recent webinar [to celebrate the release of Issue 206, featuring the article writers]. Just the thing we could do with as we remain at home, dreaming of travel. I so agreed with [Galápagos author] Sarah Gilbert’s comment on how nature comes to you in Galápagos. Sightings are instant, surprising, sudden and unplanned. During one lunch time we were called by our guide to have a look at dolphins who’d suddenly surrounded us. We rushed out to the deck and had an hour with these animals who seemed to understand our interest in them. They swam, played, frolicked, jumped in pairs in a choreographed concert around our boat. Our captain took it in circles around the group and they circled us in another direction,…
