MAY IS A SIGNIFICANT MONTH for me. Three years ago, celebrating Mother’s Day at home with my extended family, I made a giant smoked ham hock and pork belly pie with mashed potato. I wrote about it a few months later for the “Comfort food” issue, because that was also the day I learned my second IVF attempt had failed.I don’t think I really appreciated the therapeutic power of cooking until I made that pie.
