you say

I’VE tried many times to get into meditation but it’s always been difficult. Time is usually my problem. I’m always rushing to do something or the other and it feels like pure indulgence to just sit still and focus on my breathing and stilling my mind. But after reading Lindsay de Freitas’ story on page 86 I’m giving it another go. I know the benefits are plentiful and I have, on the occasions I’ve tried it, seen a difference in my state of mind. Just this morning I did a 10-minute session and, even though it was short, it put me in a good headspace to prepare for our print deadline today. Even traffic, which would usually be utterly irksome, couldn’t burst my bubble of serenity. I’m going to try to do it every…

my amazing stepdad

I GREW up in a family of five and my step-dad was the best. I didn’t know he wasn’t my biological father until February this year when I turned 28. I’m the youngest and my siblings used to treat me very badly. I just thought it was because they assumed I was my mom’s favourite but then my sister told me I have a different father. When I confronted my mother about it, she didn’t deny it. She told me she was raped and that’s how I was conceived. Emotionally I was so disturbed that it started affecting my work. I approached my stepdad and he too confirmed my mom’s story. Sadly the rapist was never found. I owe everything to my father whom I don’t see as a stepdad. Dad, you’re the best. No man…

ABOUT RECYCLING Thanks for your article Recycle Like a Pro (YOU, 11 July) but I have a few questions. When cleaning your recycling, do labels have to be removed from containers? I often find that if I want to use a bottle for myself, it’s almost impossible to remove the label. I can’t see many people willing to spend time doing this. May I appeal to manufacturers and retailers to use labels that can be removed easily? Even books bought from reputable stationers have labels that ruin the cover of the book when I try to remove them. Secondly, supermarkets and stores tell us to reuse or recycle the bags they issue, but your article states that “flimsy plastic bags quickly degrade and can clog up expensive sorting equipment, causing delays and endangering workers”. So…

reckless on the road

I was shocked and stunned to see this child hanging out of a car window while I was taking my kids to the movies recently. It was in a traffic jam on a road near a hospital. At least she would’ve been treated quickly had she fallen out and injured herself. But given the smoking going on in the car, I’m not surprised she was trying to keep her head outside. MYRNA, EMAIL South African drivers seem to be the most reckless in the world. It’s shocking to see how many drivers become impatient in traffic jams and break the rules of the road. The road signs and markings are there to be followed. Ignoring them is asking for trouble. Some drivers keep their high-beam lights on even when there’s oncoming traffic at night. The…

in brief

Before you cheat on your spouse, ask yourself: how would I feel if the same thing were to be done to me? Being a man or woman of integrity is the sweetest gift you can give to yourself and to those around you. NV, WELTEVREDE My son Zaid (14) loves the Laugh a Little section in YOU and always reads it out to me. YOU allows us to bond, laugh, debate and make wonderful memories as mother and son. We appreciate YOU. M WILLIAMS, KRAAIFONTEIN Poor Prince Harry is soon going to be known as “Henpecked Harry” (YOU, 11 July). What Meghan wants, Meghan gets. PAT, DURBAN Poverty is wagging its ugly tail and it’s made worse by the high prices in the shops. It seems manufacturers and retailers can charge what they want. We need…
