WE SHARE our house with a dog and a cat that are utterly beholden to us yet rule the roost. The dog needs to go for walks twice a day so mornings and evenings revolve around that. If she doesn’t go she paces up and down, stopping only to gaze longingly at the front door. The cat is just plain impossible. If you dare sleep past 7am she stares at you and cries until you get up. If you still ignore her, she sits on your chest and bats your eyelids. She’ll also meow at the closed back door and ignore the open patio one, even though it’s just metres away. She wants to come in that door, so hop to it. But the thought of life without them is unimaginable. Both…

GIFT OF LIFE THERE aren’t many things that can impress an old bird like me. When you’ve lived to be 81, you’ve seen it all – the good, the glorious, and, unfortunately, the garbage. We’re confronted by such hatred and violence every day that it’s often just too much to bear. But today I’d like to share a beautiful story: a few weeks ago my grandson Kyle put his life on the line by donating a kidney to his wife’s sister who desperately needed one. He knew the risks involved and how painful it would be, and he did it anyway. He saved her life and at the same time made the world a better place. He might be only 28 years old, but he’s taught me a lesson in kindness. In my…

MEGHAN THE MISFIT I have an enormous amount of respect for Meghan, Duchess of Sussex (YOU, 28 November). But, in my opinion, she doesn’t fit into the royal family. The stiff upper lip doesn’t gel with her character. Meghan is vivacious and this isn’t a trait suited to the role she’s expected to play. If you compare her demeanour with how well Kate is playing her role, they’re chalk and cheese. This is likely to be the reason why Harry is so protective of her, and is suffering so much stress over the situation. I sympathise with them both. This debacle reminds me so much of Fergie’s introduction into the royal family. That didn’t go so well either. It’s truly a disturbing and sad time for all royals concerned. KAREN WARREN, EMAIL IN PRAISE OF FORGIVENESS “I’ll never…

finding love when you least expect it

Ten years ago I decided to stop dating and to focus on my studies. Then when I started working I felt the need to start dating again. But I remained single, lonely and searching for a year. Then one day I received a call from a stranger. It was clear that the man had called the wrong number. I said, “Wrong number,” and hung up. But for some reason his voice repeated itself in my mind the whole day and haunted me in my sleep that night. Fortunately he called the next morning to tell me he liked my voice and would like us to meet. “Blind date? Not my style,” I snapped even though I wanted to meet him. Nevertheless we started to text each other and eventually agreed to meet at a shopping…

in brief

Siya Kolisi wasn’t made captain of the Boks because of quotas. He got the job because he’s the best man for it. It’s just a bonus that the rainbow nation was for the most part represented. RUGBY FAN, SMS Helen Zille, I’m glad you’re back where you belong. The party will now return to its former glory. ADMIRER. SMS Koos Bulunga, what a beautiful letter (YOU Say, 21 November). Will you be my older brother, please? JACQUI MER, SMS I really don’t understand what the fuss is about Faf de Klerk meeting Prince Harry wearing only the famous briefs (YOU, 21 November). Harry is no prude and has been known to cavort while partying in the States! JUTTA DONALDSON, SMS Thank you so much for the extract from Bill Bryson’s book about the human body (YOU, 14 November).…
