WE’VE long been proud of Princess Charlene, our Olympic swimming sensation who caught the eye of a prince and proceeded to live the kind of life fairytales are made of. Home is a palace overlooking Monaco, and over the years the beautiful stone structure has featured frequently in YOU as we reported on the Grimaldi family. Imagine going there, we’d sometimes say. Then a few weeks ago a phone call came from a member of Charlene’s publicity team: Her Serene Highness would like to invite a team from YOU to the palace. It was probably too good to be true, we thought. Until the invitation arrives, we won’t get our hopes up. But the invitation did arrive – and next thing entertainment writer Nici de Wet and photographer Misha Jordaan were winging their way…

SPREAD A LITTLE CHEER IT WAS an ordinary Tuesday afternoon and I was rushing back to the office after a meeting. The usual sunny Durban weather had been replaced by a downpour. Caught in the rain with no umbrella, I sought refuge in a little café not too far from the office. I decided to buy lunch to enjoy while I waited for the showers to pass. While waiting for my order I noticed a homeless man standing at the door, presumably seeking refuge from the rain too. As people left the shop, he’d politely ask them if they had any change to spare. People walked past him as if he wasn’t there. I approached him and asked if he was hungry, and he replied, “Very, I haven’t eaten in days.” I offered…

in brief

I often wonder why so many people, even in news bulletins, say things such as, “3am in the morning” or “4pm in the afternoon”. It’s repetition – “am” is morning and “pm” is afternoon. One should rather say 3 o’clock in the morning or 4 o’clock in the afternoon. FUSSY, SMS Long, laborious handwritten letters were replaced by quick, zippy emails. These were replaced by even quicker, zippier WhatsApps. What’s next? MAGGIE, SMS I hope it’s true that Top Billing will end. I find the proud display of wealth vulgar in the extreme! LIZ VIVIERS, FISHERHAVEN In response to the letter about sex after 60 (YOU, 31 October), if my husband asks me for sex when I’m 70 and he’s 73, I’ll run away. After 50 years of marriage enough is enough. GOOD GRIEF, DURBAN The moment you…

we’re in puzzling heaven

Well, a Monday morning trip to the supermarket most times is boring but not today! As I arrived at my local Pick n Pay I saw something to lift my spirits: the latest YOU Blockbusters (No 22) – and to see that it was bumper-sized was a real bonanza. Thanks so much for your generosity towards your loyal buyers. It will make our Christmas and New Year festivities all the more enjoyable. I can’t wait to get stuck into my new puzzle book and I’m very happy to see the new brainteasers too. LOUISE BESSENYEI, STRAND I wrote to you a few months ago in connection with the YOU Blockbuster book and asked if it was possible to add the jigsaw sudoku to the puzzles and you said you’d look into it. I was…
