YOU have to feel for Queen Elizabeth. Not that she’s a pitiful figure – far from it. But no one would begrudge her a quieter life at the age of 93, hanging out more with the corgis, taking tea with her retired husband, smiling indulgently as her great-grandchildren scamper across the lawns, maybe sipping a tipple while watching a spot of telly. Instead what does she get? A family that keeps dishing up one drama after the next. Last year was bookended by disasters: Prince Philip’s car crash at the start and Prince Andrew’s disastrous TV interview at the end. Annus horribilis, that was 2019, and Her Majesty must have been pleased to turn her back on it. But she had little time to catch her breath: Meghan and Harry’s “abdication” has thrown…

THE SPARK’S STILL ALIVE I FEEL sorry for the reader who said she would run away if her husband still asked her for sex after she turns 70 (YOU Say, 26 December). My husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the beginning of October. We’re 70 and 71. While we aren’t swinging from the chandeliers, we do still enjoy our lovemaking. May it continue for many years to come. Whoop, whoop! NELLIE, EMAIL AIN’T LOVE GRAND! The article on Suzette van der Merwe’s wedding was fascinating (YOU, 9 January). The story of how she and Mark Weston met and eventually tied the knot is testimony to the fact that love conquers all. Their love is so strong that they didn’t mind taking a long, difficult journey of two flights from South Africa to New Zealand…

teach our boys well

I was moved by the interview with Jesse Hess’ grieving father (YOU, 9 January). The rape and murder of young women around the country clearly indicate that there are many wolves hiding in sheep’s clothing in our society. The big question in every parent’s mind is whose daughter will be the next victim. We’ve become a nation at war with itself. All men have a duty to protect women and set a good example to boy children. ABIGAIL LEDUBUKO, BOCHUM Gender-based violence makes me wonder where in South Africa a woman can be safe. We already have a big problem of women being victims of sexual abuse in their homes, schools and workplaces. You’d expect the public places such as the post office, government offices, hospitals and schools to be safe environments for everyone, yet women are…

in brief

In response to J van Eeden (YOU 2 January), I believe animal abuse of any kind should be regarded as a criminal act, and offenders should be handed a long enough sentence to punish them. KL WILLIAMS, EMAIL My ex was one of the dirtiest men I knew. He’d bath once a week but he still slept around. It just goes to show what some women will do for money regardless of poor hygiene. I’m so glad to be rid of this filthy, useless man. GOOD RIDDANCE, EMAIL The story of the little girl who was kidnapped horrified me (YOU, 5 December). May she and her parents find comfort and healing in the knowledge that every mother and father is with them in thought and prayer. As for the perpetrators, let them have their…

end of the fairytale

IT HASN’T even been two years since that glorious golden day when the world watched a former bad-boy prince marry a sleek beauty in a chapel cloaked in splendour and steeped in tradition. The global hype was off the charts – even Prince William and Kate’s wedding, wonderful though it was, paled in comparison. This was the fairytale to end all fairy-tales. Harry, that once lost and direction-less lad, had fallen for a woman of the world, a woman who clearly loved her prince but had a strong mind of her own. What a pair they’d make, he with his easy charm and sense of fun, she with her California confidence and street smarts. Harry and Meghan, observers predicted, were going to shake things up. In fact, they could be the best thing to…
