welcome…

Our cover star Sally Phillips’ new film celebrates female friendship and she is passionate about how valuable her gal pals are to her. I have two particularly good friends, both more ‘mature’ than me, who I really admire for the amount of effort they put into all their friendships. They both have an army of school pals, work chums, fond friends and bosom buddies who they’ve cultivated and really nurtured over many years, so I feel very privileged to be able to count myself among them. Throughout the pandemic we’ve shared twice-weekly Zoom chats, easily managing to keep the conversation flowing for a couple of hours at a time and keeping each other’s spirits high. We’d love to celebrate your special friends. Please write and let us know who has been with…

surprise friends

Wonder what EastEnder Dot Cotton would make of rubbing shoulders with A-list celebrities? But that’s exactly what the actress June Brown, who plays Dot, has been doing after becoming good friends with singer Lady Gaga following a chat show appearance together. He wasn’t in a particularly good mood as he was late due to the heavy traffic. What also didn’t help was that I could hear my colleague in the back office humming Fly Me to the Moon… How I remained professional and kept a straight face I shall never know! Valerie Chetwood, Berks Wick you believe it! ◆ In a recent letter a reader asked if anyone had emergency candles that were used during the three-day week in the Seventies. When clearing my late mother’s house, I found some which date back to the…

friends are so precious

Sally Phillips – of numerous comedy roles including Miranda and Bridget Jones – is undeniably a hoot. But for once, she’s not laughing. The actress, comedian and writer is talking to us about the late Kelly Preston, the US actress – aka Mrs John Travolta – who passed away last summer from breast cancer. Kelly posthumously co-stars with Sally and Jenny Seagrove in Off the Rails, a comedy drama about three 50-something women – pals since their teens – who embark on a train trip across Europe, retracing the journey they undertook as 18-year-olds. The three are joined by Maddie (18), the daughter of their friend, Anna, the fourth member of the girl gang who took the trip, who has just passed away. From breast cancer… “It’s a horrible, horrible irony,” says Sally.…
