For her resort 2023 collection, Tory Burch found inspiration in the work of Claire McCardell, whose postwar fashions championed functionality and gave rise to American sportswear. At once modern and retro, Burch’s easy separates, cheerful palette, and whimsical details (like zigzag trimmings) feel like the makings of the perfect workplace wardrobe at a time when no one quite knows what the rules are. To select the right figs or pears or olallie-berries for each bowl, Chez Panisse’s kitchen staff carefully tracks the ripeness of each one, sorting, sniffing, and prodding them throughout the day. The goal of the dish is to celebrate not just the bounty that the restaurant receives from local farmers daily, but its innate potential. ISLAND TIME For one of resort season’s biggest standouts, Fendi’s Silvia Venturini Fendi looked to Sardinia for inspiration. With a focus on textiles, this “hand in hand” Baguette marks a rare departure from leather for the Roman house. Artisans from Fendi collaborated with women’s weaving cooperative Su Marmuri, in the hilltop village of Ulassai, using manual looms to create raised relief patterns, known colloquially as pibiones (“grapes”) in the local dialect.
