THE lockdowns have forced many of us to change the way we do things. For us here at 4X4 Australia, one of the big things has been the ability to get out and about, compiling travel features and photographing our cars in the best locations. Thankfully we have a great team of freelance contributors, many of who have been basing themselves in places where they can still travel and have been able to continue to produce great material for us from all over Australia. For our road tests here in Victoria, we have again leaned on our friends at the Melbourne 4x4 Proving Ground to give us access to the facility to do our testing – again, we thank them very much. As this is written, there is hope that things are opening…

ineos grenadier arrives in australia

AUSTRALIANS will be able to place an order for an Ineos Grenadier by the time you are reading ths, with deliveries of the all-new 4x4 wagon set to occur late in 2022. Just the five-door Grenadier wagon will be offered initially, with prices starting from $84,500. A four-door double-cab pickup Grenadier will follow in a few years time. The Grenadier is the first vehicle from Ineos Automotive, a name you may recognise as a sponsor of the British America’s Cup yachting squad, Mercedes F1 Racing team and British road-cycling teams, but primarily it is a huge chemical production company. Ineos owner, Jim Ratcliffe, recognised the need for a traditional, off-road capable four-wheel drive utility vehicle after Land Rover announced it was planning to stop making the classic Land Rover Defender. When Land…

cape york is changing

AFTER yet another jaunt to Cape York, I’ve gotta say the Cape remains the premier long-distance destination for adventurous four-wheel drivers in Australia. Yep, places like the Simpson and the Kimberley are on many people’s bucket list, but the Cape remains a firm favourite, as it has for the last 30 to 40 years. I say that after not only being to Cape York this year but also having wandered the Victorian High Country, crossed the Simpson, wandered many of the Beadell Roads of the western deserts, the Pilbara and goldfields regions of WA, and the Flinders Ranges in SA. Thinking about that, I’ve been pretty lucky in what has been a hell of a COVID-disrupted year; but, anyway, back to the Cape. Nowhere, absolutely nowhere, excites the travel bug of…

plug-in hybrids are the future

QUICK quiz: What do electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrids, mild hybrids and even some mobility scooters have in common? Some sort of electric motor, you suggest? Well, yes, you’re half right, but the correct answer is an electric motor/generator unit. So just what is an electric motor/generator? Put simply, it’s something that can convert electrical energy to mechanical energy (that’s the motor ‘part’) or alternately, convert mechanical energy to electrical energy (that’s the generator ‘part’). Operating as a motor, it uses electrical energy stored in the battery to produce mechanical energy to propel the vehicle; while as a generator, it can harness the mechanical energy of the vehicle’s momentum to produce electricity, which is then stored back in the battery. In an EV (or a mobility scooter for that matter) a…
