f is for fairs

As a magazine dedicated to helping collectors find new work to acquire for their collections, we naturally got involved in art fairs early on in the popularity of such events over the last 10 to 15 years. We get involved with fairs for two reasons: one, to support the galleries who pay to get into the fairs; and two because that is where the collectors are. And anywhere art collectors are these days we want to be there too. Nothing makes us happier than seeing collectors walk around art fairs such as Market Art + Design, the LA Art Show, Art Aspen, Frieze Los Angeles, Art on Paper or any of the other fairs we sponsor with a copy of this magazine tucked under their arm. Something we have promised since…

Distinction Gallery presents represented artist Jana Brike’s exhibition Sea of Change at San Diego Art Institute in California, featuring eight large-scale commissioned paintings. The pieces depict women of all ages and cultures, a self-portrait, animals and more as they stroll through the ocean. Brike says, “My aim with Sea of Change was to tell a story about succession and changes in a woman’s life, about different manifestations of the feminine through a walk of archetypal female and animal figures. I am a woman depicting a woman’s life in its numinous quality and purpose, her movement toward her truer, wilder, freer self.”…

alicia ponzio: carving out new challenges

Internationally known, award-winning sculptor Alicia Ponzio is a member of the Portrait Society of America, has served on the faculty of The Art of the Portrait conferences, and was awarded First Place Sculpture in the 2016 International Portrait Competition. In September 2018, she unveiled the bust of Nashville Symphony Music Director Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero in honor of his 10 anniversary with the orchestra. After recently speaking with Ponzio, I found her story about how she came to her art career fascinating and inspiring. For as long as Ponzio can remember, her main interest was art, but for a variety of reasons shortly after graduating from high school, she enlisted in the military. She served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy with a career in nursing. It was during her last…
