What Might’ve Been It was wonderful to see Jim Schmidt’s Viking Dagger gracing the cover of the April BLADE®. As I read the accompanying article about his work, it reminded me of my experience with him from several years ago. I met Mr. Schmidt at one of the many custom knife shows that I used to attend. I was so moved that I asked him how I might be able to get one for my collection. He informed me that at the time he had a five-year wait for such an item, and he even quoted me what I felt was a very reasonable price. Figuring that the…

The BLADE Show is the Gigantopithecus of knife events. How did it get there? In chronological order, let’s review. 1) No Top 10 list can start without the start, and the BLADE Show started when BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame® members Jim Parker and Bruce Voyles organized the first one at the Drawbridge Motor Inn across the Ohio River from Cincinnati in Erlanger, Kentucky, in 1981. 2) Jim and Bruce’s creation in 1983 of the BLADE Magazine Knife-Of-The-Year® Awards and the BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall Of Fame® set in motion two cutlery industry standards that today are among the most coveted of knife achievements. Announcing them all at the BLADE Show gave—and continues to give—both the honors themselves and the show that much more cachet. 3) Moving the BLADE Show to the sprawling Holiday…
