Nobiskrug has lifted the veil on 262ft Artefact. In construction in Germany, the yacht owes its exterior design to Gregory C Marshall Naval Architect (GCMNA). Clients intent on shattering conventions and embracing newer technology in their first large yacht liked the first, striking design the firm presented. While it grew in length, Artefact has remained true to the spirit of the original concept (the result of an intra-office design competition between GCMNA’s designers). Matching the innovation above the waterline, which includes 70 tons of glass and a composite superstructure, is the technology within. Artefact will cruise quietly, moved by an ABB hybrid electric pod propulsion system. The bustling refit market shows no signs of slowing down, with project numbers up year on year. Between September 2017 and August 2018, 408 refits were carried out, compared with 390 over the same period in 2016-17. Refits were most common on boats measuring between 24m and 30m (78-98ft), with 116 of these going under the knife in 2017-18, an increase of 102 over the previous year. UK yard Pendennis revealed that while 2017 was the busiest year in the history of its refit division, this is likely to be matched by 2018’s figures. Its refit division has 11 booked in this season alone, including its “significant” recent refit of 233ft Haida 1929 (see page 116). When Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) went under the hammer in a New York auction on November 15 (after Boat International went to press), it was expected to make David Hockney the world’s most expensive living artist. The seller of the painting, which had an estimated value in the region of $80 million, was reported to be Joe Lewis, owner of UK soccer club Tottenham Hotspur as well as an awe-inspiring art collection.
