The idea first sprang from the fertile mind of car design supremo Chris Bangle – why do yachts have to be symmetrical? He had been commissioned by Sanlorenzo to do a blue-sky study on the yard’s next generation of yachts, and came up with this: an off-center superstructure, offering best-in-class views from huge panoramic windows and more space in the yacht’s main living areas. The idea was then “yachtified” by design studio Zuccon, and the result is presented in this issue for the first time – the SL102, one of the world’s first asymmetric superyachts. Perini Navi has floated the completed steel hull and aluminum superstructure of a new 182ft motor yacht in Turkey before sending it to Viareggio, Italy, where the sold tri-deck explorer will be completed. The yacht’s vertical bow is a feature of the Vitruvius design by French naval architect Philippe Briand. This is the fourth Vitruvius motor yacht built by Perini Navi, after 164ft Exuma , 183ft Galileo G and 240ft Nautilus (launched as Grace E ), and is designed like its sisterships for long voyages around the globe. With two Cat C32 ACERT engines, an efficient hull with a 32ft beam at its widest and fuel capacity of 25,334 gallons, it is easily able to carry 12 guests and nine crew across oceans. Time and money are precious and are why a prospective superyacht owner might choose a conversion Over a new build. But the advantages of transforming an older commercial, already seaworthy vessel into a pleasure yacht are bountiful. Andrew Winch began his journey to dream-maker in Jon Bannenberg’s yacht design studio in London in 1980, a young man bubbling with ideas, recently out of design school and fresh from an adventure at sea on a 50ft sailing boat. With a few years of studio experience under his belt, he set out on his own in 1986 and established Andrew Winch Design (now Winch Design), with his wife, Jane. SCOUT MASTER Floated at the Hakvoort shipyard in the quaint Dutch town of Monnickendam, 209ft Scout is the family-owned company’s new flagship. The explorer, complete with helipad, filled every bit of space in the construction shed before being backed into the water on December 1. Still in need of finishing touches, such as mast, radar, crow’s nest and underwater appendages, the yacht was then towed to nearby Amsterdam for final commissioning. Resold by Fraser to a new client in the early stages of construction, the project acquired a new look.
