Huge congratulations to all the winners of our Design & Innovation Awards (page 32). The ceremony was held in Cortina, Italy, in late January and saw a who’s who of superyachting gather to learn who’d picked up one of the coveted golden Neptunes. One of the most eye-catching winners was White Rabbit, the novel new 276ft trimaran. You can read at length why the judges singled her out on page 90, but in brief it’s because she can achieve the same top speed as a similar-sized monohull using considerably less power. This is obviously a huge advantage, but what are the downsides to this hull form? The latest Delta, formerly known as project 174046, emerged in Seattle as the shiny, new MLR in late January. The 175ft yacht sports a classic bow and beautifully finished aluminum hull painted a metallic color that changes with the light, while the superstructure in contrasting white is built in composite. The naval architecture done in-house is that of a sporty semi-displacement yacht with a Caribbean-friendly draft and, powered with two 3,860hp MTU 16V 4000 M73L engines, capable of topping 19 knots. MLR will also be able to cover long distances thanks in part to its 23,800-gallon fuel capacity. The yacht’s streamlined appearance, penned by JQB Design, belies its generous interior volume and an expansive sundeck complete with pool and waterfall. With increased sales and a record post-crash value, the global brokerage market racked up another blistering performance in 2018: 434 superyachts changed hands, with a total asking price of $5.005 billion. The headline news was the surge in the top echelon of the market. Twelve yachts of more than 70 meters (230ft) were sold in 2018, up from eight the year before. Notable examples include 360ft Oceanco Jubilee and 380ft Project Testarossa, and such massive deals are part of the reason the overall asking price has reached record levels. Richard Lambert, head of sales at Burgess, says the broker’s sale of Jubilee would have had a “skewing effect” on the market. Long waiting times for new build yachts and the arrival of “young wealth” are key factors behind this surge, brokers agree.…

It's been 6o years since Some Like It Hot redefined silver screen comedy forever. Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon may have taken top billing, but the uncredited fourth star of the movie was the classic 120ft motor yacht Lovely Lady, which played a pivotal role in the plot. In the famous beach scene, where Curtis's musician Joe, masquerading as an oil tycoon, drops heavy hints about his enormous wealth to Monroe's hapless ukulele player Sugar Kane, it is his mention of a yacht that seals the deal. FAREWELL VOYAGER A few days after the covers were off, the largest conversion project in the US was towed out of Dania Cut near Fort Lauderdale. Despite her enormous size, Voyager remains something of a mystery. What’s known is that she began as a concept by Kirilloff and Associates in 2014 that reimagined a 225ft offshore supply vessel, known as HOS Trader as a 300ft yacht escort with a helideck and dive center. She arrived in 2016 at Dania Cut a work in progress and, for most of the following two and a half years, work continued under cover until the mid-January reveal.
