Few boats embody their potential quite like Ragnar, this month’s cover star. She’s got a great look for an explorer, and a great story. After delivery, she didn’t head to the Med, as so many boats do – she set course for Iceland. And she won’t stop there. I expect to see her AIS signature popping up in many more unusual places over the next few years, and why not? If this roller-coaster year has taught us anything, it’s that you never know what’s around the corner. So if you have the opportunity to make that passage you always wanted to make, or start planning a circumnavigation, or visit the island you’ve been dreaming about, my advice is: do it. Our annual Adventure Issue lands at a good time to…

Simon de Burton Simon is a journalist, author and lifelong fan of adventure travel. He prefers to avoid flying, so for this issue he picks out the best alternative modes of transport for thrill seekers (page 26). Which was your favorite of the vehicles you researched? The Mercedes van with all-wheel-drive conversion – it really opens up the possibilities for adventures into the wilderness. And with all that storage space, you’ve always got a warm and dry place to sleep Your most remarkable adventure to date? It wasn’t my biggest adventure, but a 10-day walk across the Eastern Desert in 2018 was one of my most memorable. I have always wanted to take part in the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge – and in 2022 I finally will, driving a 1972 Citroën DS rally car.…

MAGNUM OPUS Lürssen launches its record-breaking, six-deck leviathan ahead of trials A much-anticipated 466ft yacht has emerged from the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen, Germany, about a year after making her way to the completion shed. Known as superyacht Opus (formerly project Redwood), the six-deck behemoth owes her exterior design to Nuvolari Lenard and is by far the largest yacht to bear the Italian design firm’s signature inside and out. Moran Yacht & Ship oversaw the construction of Opus, which has space for 36 guests in 20 cabins and is, according to Robert Moran, the largest new construction project sold and managed by a brokerage company to date. She features two helipads, a watersports and diving center, a large swimming pool and a fleet of tenders measuring up to 49 feet. Handover is…

eye opener

It’s little surprise that shots from Slim Aarons’ 1961 trip to India showcase the serene and the lavish, rather than the hustle and bustle of the subcontinent. Here, well-heeled guests take a shaded lunch on the top deck of the HB Cutty Sark as she glides through lily pads on the Jhelum River, near Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley. He also stopped in on India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who he snapped perfectly posed in his silver motorcade. Aarons is among the most famous society photographers in history, with a stylized, richly colored aesthetic that is instantly recognizable and much emulated. Working for magazines such as Life, Town & Country and Harper’s Bazaar, he made his subjects look beautiful and rich, shamelessly laying out their wealth and privilege –…

Aluminum giants get in gear A little more than two years after presenting the project, Heesen Yachts has achieved a major milestone in the construction of its flagship, Project Cosmos. In July, four engines and two gearboxes went in and the large superstructure was lowered onto the 263ft aluminum hull. With an aggressive speed goal (30 knots) for a yacht with substantial volume (1,700 GT), nothing can be taken lightly, so the hull was weighed after welding. A barge then transported it across a river where four cranes lifted it into the water, before the superstructure was fastened on. It’s Van Oossanen Naval Architects’ largest fast-displacement hull yet and was constructed with a patented “backbone” to ensure sufficient stiffness. The launch is planned for 2021. Meanwhile, Sea Eagle II has set…
