editor’s letter

I had an alarming conversation with a yacht owner based in the Galápagos as we were finishing up this issue. To be honest, I hadn’t thought much about the island group during the pandemic, but his words were unequivocal: they need help. Tourism is everything to the Galápagos – yachting tourism, especially. What was set to be a bumper year, with dozens of superyachts stopping by on their way to New Zealand for the America’s Cup, has turned into one of the worst years imaginable for the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Checking AIS as we were going to press, I saw just one solitary sailing yacht heading for the islands. The future of this exceptional marine environment is under threat, now more than ever as a vast fleet of long-line…

Ray Main Trained as an architectural photographer, Ray moved into lifestyle, food and travel in the 1990s. He now divides his time between London and India and his work can be found in more than 100 books. For this issue, he shot IJE’s interiors (page 52). The best thing about IJE? When you’re on a boat that’s 354ft long and has so much grace, space and pace, what’s not to like? Biggest challenge in shooting it? Getting the proportions right, and even in the southern Pacific there is still the weather to contend with. I really felt for the poor crew having to wipe down the whole boat after the shortest of showers The first place you’d go in IJE? Reine in Norway. I love where these new boats are capable of going, and then there are…

Two nautilus-shaped eyes at the center of the yacht are the first attention-grabbers on the exterior of this 328ft explorer designed by London-based Gresham Yacht Design. However, it’s the interior that took the lead in this concept for a go-anywhere Ice Class explorer with a projected range of 7,000 nautical miles and accommodation for 36 guests. The heart of Thor Explore is a two-level salon, flanked by double-height windows, with a glass floor that turns opaque at the flick of a switch. And let’s not forget the garage – a high-tech space with enough room to accommodate the kind of fleet a Marvel superhero would want to deploy.…

eye opener

Growing up in 1950s New Jersey, young author William H Miller loved to watch the great ocean liners coming and going from New York Harbor. The pastime sparked an ambition to embark on such a journey. “I thought to myself: what would it be like to be on one of them, looking back at New York in the other direction?” Not long after, Miller got his chance, joining his grandmother on a cruise from New York to Europe in 1961. Recalling the trip, Miller says, “I was immediately bitten by the magic of standing on the deck of a moving ship.” The transatlantic voyage gave birth to a lifelong passion that would turn Miller into a veritable expert on the history of ocean liner cruising. The result is Sailing to the…

Perfect match The newest born in Heesen Yachts’ 55-meter Steel class, with exterior styling by Omega Architects, is 180ft Solemates (formerly Project Castor). After her timely delivery in August, she headed for the US. Rupert Connor, of the Luxury Yacht Group, managed the project on behalf of the owner since the yacht’s purchase in May 2019. A galley large enough to accommodate two chefs – “the owner is an absolutely impeccable host,” Connor says – and the size and layout of the main salon and sky lounge were among deciding factors, as well as short delivery time, stability and long range. Like the previous Solemates, she will be available for charter. GOING THE DISTANCE In an ocean of cancellations, the Ida Lewis Distance Race held in Newport on August 15 was a…
