editor’s letter

It’s been interesting, 2020, but it’s almost time for you to shuffle off. But before we hide it behind the couch and focus on the future, let’s at least try to finish it with a bang. The twice-delayed World Superyacht Awards finally had their moment on November 13 – yes, that’s Friday the 13th of November. Talk about tempting fate. However, as I write this ahead of time, preparations for our first ever virtual awards ceremony are going well. I hope you tuned in to see the winners – all of whom are revealed in this issue. I’d like to extend a massive congratulations to all the worthy recipients of a Neptune this year. As I never get tired of saying, these awards matter because they are peer-judged. Neither I…

Francisco Martinez Born and raised in Barcelona, Francisco moved to Amsterdam after studying photography in the 1990s. He now works worldwide, and has specialized in yachts since 2003. For this issue he captures the majesty of Artefact (page 50). What were you thinking about while shooting Artefact? My mind was set on capturing the energy of the boat in motion, and all the features of a man-made object amid the natural beauty of St Lucia – and also the elegance and scale of her proportions What has been your most memorable shoot to date? Without doubt this was my number-one shoot ever. I enjoyed every second of it. From the moment I stepped on board I realized how lucky I was to have the chance to shoot such a beautiful creation. I have to say…

big cat adventure

Prolific Louisiana-based Metal Shark is known for its diverse range of commercial and fast patrol vessels, but this new launch is sure to make waves in the yachting sector. The 158ft Magnet is the first of a new range of made-for-adventure catamarans, ranging in size from 100ft to 231ft, that Metal Shark has developed. Magnet has a range of 11,000 nautical miles at 10 knots and is fast too, reaching 27 knots in sea trials. “Each of our catamaran Metal Shark Yachts have been designed to eliminate adherence to rigid itineraries, opening up opportunities for exploration,” Metal Shark CEO Chris Allard says. That’s exactly what the owner, George Wallner, had in mind. “With Magnet , I can travel quickly to faraway places, and everyone on board can enjoy the adventure.”…

eye opener

“I think what makes a picture is a moment that is completely spontaneous and natural and unaffected by the photographer,” award-winning and long-time Life photographer William E. “Bill” Eppridge once said. This philosophy certainly underpins the unguarded moment that he captured in 1965 while focusing his lens on the 167ft yacht Southern Breeze in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Mia Farrow, just 20 years old, is in her bathrobe, basking in her budding love affair with Frank Sinatra, nearly 30 years her senior. There was no suppressing the public’s thirst for news of Ol’ Blue Eyes and his luminous new love interest. They met in 1964 after Farrow, daughter of actress Maureen O’Sullivan, became a household name at 19 by joining the cast of Peyton Place . When she heard rumors of their…

And they’re off! A keel ceremony marked the start of construction on Project Skyfall at the Heesen shipyard in the Netherlands. The builder says the yacht, which was designed by Omega Architects and is based on a fast displacement hull form, is oriented toward the pursuit of fish. This custom project is nothing if not daring. Four MTU engines with a total of 22,000 horsepower will drive four Kongsberg S90 water-jets, quieter than conventional propulsion. The center engines will be used only for the highest speeds. Calculations project that the 197ft all-aluminum yacht’s top speed will be 37 knots, which sea trials will confirm in 2023 when the yacht makes its first moves in the North Sea.
