As I write this, our cover boat, La Datcha, is in the Maldives, on her way to the Kamchatka Peninsula, a vast, largely empty wilderness hanging appendix-like off the edge of Russia. The region is home to bears, tigers, orca – and more than 300 volcanoes, which provide some of world’s most extreme heli-skiing. As a place to shake down your new explorer yacht, and test all its toys (twin helicopters and Triton submarine, to name a few), it doesn’t get much better than that. But beyond the headline features, it’s the more prosaic aspects of a boat like this that really amp up its functionality in far-flung places: the substantial mud room for getting cold-weather gear on and off, vast wastewater tanks for cruising in no-discharge zones and sufficient…

Jeremy White Jeremy is executive editor of the UK edition of WIRED. For this issue, he picks out the best new tech (page 36). What’s your favorite item in your tech edit? The Bose Frames, for the simple reason that until you try these audio sunglasses you simply won’t believe how good the sound quality is from the tiny speakers embedded in the arms of the glasses. Bose has achieved something of an audio miracle The last piece of tech you bought? The new Spark smart guitar amp by Positive Grid, which is superb. Amazing sound from such a small amplifier, and it has built-in everything, including drum and bass backing that listens to what you are playing and auto adjusts to match. I wish I had this when I was learning guitar 30 years…

fantastic voyage

REVEALING THE LATEST NEWS, TRENDS AND TECH The 251ft Feadship Boardwalk emerged from the Dutch builder’s Aalsmeer facility earlier this year, but before she could begin sea trials, she had to negotiate her way through the town’s narrow canals, making for unique photo opportunities. Boardwalk was floated as project 707 in October 2020 and is due for delivery later this year. Designed by De Voogt Naval Architects, she has a steel hull, aluminum superstructure and a majestic bow with room for a helipad, plus a nice playground with a spa pool on her top deck. Built for an experienced American yacht owner, she will likely spend her first season in the Med.…

eye opener

| Blackwater photography has been compared to a treasure hunt and a flight into deep space. It takes courage to dive miles offshore into the ocean at night – prime feeding time for animals large and small. It also takes a lot of patience and luck to capture a clear image of the near-invisible aliens that rise every night from the ocean’s depths. Chinese-born wildlife photographer Songda Cai has perfected the art of blackwater photography, and his images of otherworldly beasts have been widely published. He won the Underwater category in the 2020 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, developed and produced by the Natural History Museum, London, with this image of a diamondback squid in the planktonic stage. Using long exposure on his Nikon D580 and a 60mm f2.8 photo lens,…

US classic heads east for a refit The classic 122ft Atlantide was built as Caleta for the helmsman of Shamrock – the challenger in the 1930 America’s Cup. A new chapter in its storied life has begun, with its acquisition by scientist, entrepreneur and sailing enthusiast Jim Clark. The motor sailer had been a familiar sight in the north-east of the US and in Maine until it was loaded onto a transport ship bound for the Netherlands. It will undergo a substantial refit at Royal Huisman’s refit yard, Huisfit, before re-emerging in spring 2022. FACT CHECK • Atlantide’s original designer, Alfred Mylne, also designed Britannia • Philip and Sons delivered Caleta in 1930 • Requisitioned for the war service in 1939, she helped evacuate Allied forces from Dunkirk • Renamed Corisande, the yacht makes a…
