You don’t have to have a superyacht – or even a rubber dinghy – to find something you might suddenly realise you “need” in our annual tech and toys shopping guide, although given yacht owners’ love of the new and the fun, it certainly does no harm. Find me a water-sports lover who could resist a motorised surfboard that goes from nought to 60km/h in just 2.8 seconds or, well, anyone who could turn down a beautifully designed alarm clock that makes you a cup of coffee as you wake. And even for car agnostics such as myself, the allure of one of the rallies featured on page 51 does seem pretty tempting. While some of our superyacht network, such as Anil Thadani, pick out their favourites, I’d like to…

Todd Marshard Raised in Massachusetts, Todd studied at Parsons School of Design in New York where he began a career as a stylist, before moving behind the camera to shoot for a variety of international titles. He is responsible for our fashion shoot on page 122. What’s your best location for a photo assignment? India: the colours, the architecture and the culture are so intoxicating And your favourite subject to shoot? My dream subject is not a person, but beautiful places I have never been to before Where are you off to next? I’m going back to the island of Páros in Greece, renovating and working on my new home. I’m very excited! Caroline white Caroline is Boat International’s deputy editor. On page 150 she explores the first asymmetrical SL102 yacht, Le Gipsy. What did you like most about the…

a star is born

He may be the go-to designer for super-sized superyachts, but Espen Øino’s creations tend to be as interesting as they are huge. Take world-roaming 72m Cloudbreak and her ski room, new 135.5m Crescent with her three-deck window, or his latest, 63m North Star, which has splashed in Turkey. Finished by an independent build team, the 12-guest, 1,400GT yacht will boast interiors by RWD. While details are few, her purposeful lines are an enticing introduction. She debuts at the MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona in April – and she’ll be for charter in the summer with Edmiston, if you want a closer look.…

a supersize year for sales

With increased sales and a record post-crash value, the global brokerage market racked up another blistering performance in 2018: 434 superyachts changed hands, with a total asking price of €4.26 billion. The headline news was the surge in the top echelon of the market. Twelve yachts measuring more than 70 metres were sold in 2018, up from eight the year before. Notable examples include 110-metre Oceanco Jubilee and 116-metre Project Testarossa, and such massive deals are part of the reason the overall asking price has reached record levels. Richard Lambert, head of sales at Burgess, says the broker’s sale of Jubilee would have had a “skewing effect” on the market. Andrew Bond, a broker at Fraser, agrees. “When you’ve got yachts that are asking in excess of two hundred million dollars,…

eye opener

It’s 60 years since Some Like It Hot redefined silver screen comedy forever. Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon may have taken top billing, but the uncredited fourth star of the movie was the classic 37-metre motor yacht Lovely Lady, which played a pivotal role in the plot. In the famous beach scene, where Curtis’s musician Joe, masquerading as an oil tycoon, drops heavy hints about his enormous wealth to Monroe’s hapless ukulele player Sugar Kane, it is his mention of a yacht that seals the deal. “With all the unrest in the world I don’t think anyone should have a yacht that sleeps more than 12,” he declares mock-modestly. “I quite agree,” she breathes with dollar signs practically ringing in her eyes. Later Curtis hosts her on board the…

Noble Najiba lands with grace Launch party at Feadship sees 58m Briand-designed yacht hit the water for the first time With her pared-back, sweeping lines and vertical bow, Najiba is a graceful, modern superyacht that project manager Peter Wilson said “bridged the gap between dream and reality”. Designed by Philippe Briand’s Vitruvius motor yacht division, Najiba (“noble” in Arabic) features an extremely efficient hull design by the London-based designer. The interior by Studio Christian Liaigre contrasts wood with white surfaces and “transports the guest to a whitewashed beachside villa”, according to Vitruvius. feadship.nl 49.7 knots the top speed recorded during sea trials of Sail GP’s super-fast foiling catamaran, the F50 MAIDEN VOYAGE FOR HUGE US CONVERSION One of the biggest yacht conversions in US history, 91.4m explorer Voyager, has been revealed after her mammoth three-year transformation…
