welcome

WELCOME TO THE JANUARY 2020 issue of Digital SLR Photography. When we talk about technological advances in photography, we usually focus on the progresses made in digital technology, in particular the improvements in the performance of imaging sensors and processors. However, it’s easy to overlook how far flashguns have come over the years. When I first started taking pictures, the most sophisticated models offered a choice of Auto modes based on subject distances – yes, I’m so old that single-use flash cubes were still popular! Flash photography today is unrecognisable from that of the 20th Century, with highly-specified and powerful flashguns making it far easier to take perfectly exposed flash exposures. Great Ridge by Shaun Walby www.facebook.com/shaunwalbyphotography “Superbly positioned between the Derbyshire vales of Edale and Castleton is Great Ridge, which is around two miles long and a fantastic location to visit with your camera. There are many photogenic scenes worth your time populating its length, but this is possibly the most popular.” Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 17-40mm f/4L lens. Exposure: 1/10sec at f/16 (ISO 100). Dunstanburgh Castle by Shaun Walby www.facebook.com/shaunwalbyphotography “The rocks at Boulder Beach in Northumberland provide an excellent foreground for this viewpoint looking out towards Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance. I used a Lee Filters ten-stop Neutral Density filter to enable me to apply a long exposure of three minutes to smooth the motion of the sea.” Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 17-40mm f/4L lens. Exposure: Three minutes at f/16 (ISO…

sporting greats

RICHARD PELHAM IS widely regarded as one of the best sports photographers in the UK. His career has seen him capture a variety of sports ranging from football to boxing to golf and he has attended every major sporting event, from World Cups to the Olympics. His new book features a wealth of historic sporting moments. Your career spans 30 years. How easy was it to shortlist images for the book? Deciding which images to include and which to leave out was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I’ve always thought that with all the major sporting events that I’ve captured one day I could produce a commemorative book, so I made a conscious effort to build a library of my work. This was easier with my digital images…
