fisho turns 50!

Fifty years ago – 1969 – was an eventful year. Who could forget the moon landing, Woodstock, President Nixon, or The Beatles’ Abbey Road album? Closer to home and this month, 50 years ago, Ron Calcutt, founder and original editor, put together the very first edition of Fishing World. Back then it was called the Australian Angler. It later morphed into The Australian Angler’s Fishing World, and after that, Fishing World as we know it today. Putting this special collector’s edition together involved reading through 50 years of archived magazines. It was a fascinating task. Not too many magazines survive 50 years. Fishing World has been at the forefront of fishing communication for five decades now and has survived through media changes that have seen virtually all of its paper based competition come and go, particularly in the past decade or so where the impact of social media and online content has seen huge changes in fishing based media. I’ve been a part of this magazine for about 33 years now and have worked closely with five editors over this time. fisheries research award now open

POST-GRADUATE university students are being encouraged to apply for the John Holliday Student Conservation Award, which recognises research that has outstanding contributions to the management of our fisheries and aquatic habitats. The 2019 award is open to all post-graduate students (Honours, Masters, PhD students or other post-graduate students) currently enrolled at an Australian university and are undertaking fisheries-orientated research in New South Wales. The winning entrant will receive a cash award of $3,000 Entrants are judged by a panel, including from NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSWDPI) and a representative of a NSW conservation group.
