Talking to our homes is becoming the norm more and more, from alexa to google. Smart displays haven’t had the greatest success yet but new releases are looking to address that. So far they seem to be most useful in the kitchen for looking up recipes, video calling whilst cooking or just playing music whilst cooking. Some smart home displays have more functionality than others, take google’s home hub and it’s smart home connectivity compared to facebook’s more stripped back communication device (however the latter may be due to not wanting to go in direct competition with the former). There is always the question of whether the convenience that these devices bring should come at the cost of the perceived possible invasion of privacy. The camera on the portal for instance, can…

Virtual Embodiment Researchers at the Universitat De Barcelona are studying whether putting people in a virtual body can actually have effects in the real world. For example, results so far have suggested that users placed in an ethnically different virtual body reduced their racial bias. Men with a history of domestic abuse who were placed in a woman’s body whilst having a virtual man hurl verbal abuse at them say they would recognise fear more easily. On a lighter note, those placed in a virtual Lenin wanted to learn more about the Russian Revolution and those placed in a virtual Einstein even performed better at cognitive tasks. The research continues. Driverless Schoolbus Transdev, a French-based transform firm, has halted it’s tests on driverless buses in Florida after it had been deemed unlawful by…

google pixel 3 & slate

One of the main differences between companies like Google compared to Apple is the distinct downplaying of new product launches. Apple and Samsung make much noise about their latest handsets and technology, while Google play it much cooler while creating what is generally better fundamental technology. This has been sort of reinforced with the release of the Pixel 3 phone and Pixel Slate tablet. One of the most interesting points is how Google deal with privacy and data on devices that are moving ever closer towards improved and advancing AI functions, particularly in light of the problems that have had with data privacy. The Pixel 3 comes with Call Screening – an AI-driven app that allows you to accept phone calls once you have determined who the caller is and what…

We think we’re getting somewhere by limiting the amount of screen time our kids get or restricting certain video games etc. but digital is everywhere, and kids know it! From Instagram to Snapchat, Facebook and Facebook Messenger, and let’s not forget about the number of different devices everyone can now use! Suddenly there’s a lot more to take into consideration then just limiting screen time and if we’re realistic we just can’t manage everything – think about the number of devices you, yourself use, then multiply this by the number of people in your family, monitoring them all would be a nightmare! In this article, we look at how parents can take back some digital control. How we can put our minds at…
