make your builds scary!

SPOOKY DECORATIONS If you’re trying to make your existing base a bit more Halloween-like, there are plenty of ways you can do it without having to build anything new! LIGHTING To make a base look spooky, just lower the light levels a bit. Take care not to lower them TOO much you don’t want mobs to spawn inside your safe zone – but swapping glowstone and sea lanterns for a few flickering torches can transform a base into a much creepier place! Maybe use just a fireplace instead of lighting! COBWEBS What scares people more than spiders? Not a lot! You don’t have to actually put spiders in your base, but a few well-placed cobwebs will make it look old and dusty, as if it has been undisturbed for years – and that makes anywhere…

the complete fireworks guide

BASIC FIREWORKS A firework combines two things: a rocket and (usually) a firework star. Firework rockets are crafted in groups of three, and you can add 0-7 firework stars to each group of rockets. When placed (by a player or a dispenser), a firework will shoot up into the air and explode after a few seconds. To create the simplest firework rockets, just craft a piece of paper with a piece of gunpowder. Because they have no firework star, there are no visible effects when they explode, though they ARE still useful as propulsion for use with elytra (more on that later!). As long as you have at least one piece of paper and one piece of gunpowder, you can add a variety of extra items to improve the look and performance of…

modding minecraft guide

Only certain versions of Minecraft accept mods. The Java Edition on the PC and Mac is the easiest to mod, but the Bedrock Edition on tablets, phones and Windows 10 can also have some limited Add-Ons applied. (Sorry, console owners!) ADD-ONS Only available for the Bedrock Edition, Add-Ons are small mods that don’t require any extra software to work. You can download two sample ones – Alien Invasion and Castle Siege – from the official Minecraft site at minecraft.net/en/addons, along with the unmodified behaviour and resource packs. Downloading these will help you learn how to install Add-Ons, and give you the tools you need to start making your own! Add-Ons come as “.mcworld” or “.mcpack” files, which can contain three main elements: the map you play in, any modified behaviour files, and any…

new enchantments

Tridents can be used for both melee and ranged combat, but aren’t craftable. The only way to get hold of a trident is to kill drowned until one drops or to collect one that’s been previously thrown by another player. Tridents thrown by drowned can’t be picked up! CHANNELLING The trident is a powerful weapon when thrown, but this enchantment makes it all the more devastating. Channelling can cause a lightning bolt to fall from the sky and strike the target of a thrown trident, but only if there’s a thunderstorm and the target is under open sky. You can use this to deliver high levels of damage to mobs, but also to create some incredibly rare effects. Lightning strikes turn pigs into zombie pigmen and villagers into witches, and lightning created by…

news round-up

WHAT’S THE SCORE? Mojang has announced a brand new feature for Minecraft: scoreboards! It’s heading to the Bedrock versions of the game (Windows 10, VR, Xbox One, mobile or Nintendo Switch) and will allow you to build in tallies for how many zombies a player has killed, for example, as well as fastest times to do something, or how many times someone has died. The feature has been added to the beta version of the game. It’s a bit fiddly, but you can get all the details at minecraft.net/en-us/article/scoreboards-coming-bedrock Expect scoreboards to be rolled fully into the main game soon! NEW ANNUAL! The team behind this very magazine have put together the latest edition of the Minecraft Secrets & Cheats Annual! Available in shops now, it’s jam-packed with ideas, tips, jokes (very bad jokes!), the return…

block of the month

CARPET WHERE TO FIND IT Igloos always contain white, light grey and red carpet. Sometimes the carpet hides a secret trapdoor! A woodland mansion can generate all colours of carpet except orange, which makes this the only type you can’t scavenge in the game! Note that the colour of carpet generated depends on the type of rooms that appear in a mansion. All mansions contain some carpet, but not all mansions contain all carpets. On the Bedrock Edition, all village libraries contain tables that have one piece of brown carpet acting as a tabletop. On the Java Edition, these are made of wooden pressure plates instead. HOW TO MINE IT You can turn any two blocks of wool into three tiles of carpet, though the wool blocks must be the same colour. If you can’t collect…
