minecraft earth

THE BASICS In case you don’t know – and if you don’t, have you been living under a rock recently?! – Minecraft Earth is an AR (Augmented Reality) game for mobile devices that brings Minecraft to the real world. Think of it as being a bit like Pokémon GO, but for Minecraft. In the game, you can travel to real-life locations to build stuff, collect resources and meet other players. It’s completely separate from Minecraft, and will be available for both iOS and Android devices. It will also be free to download and play, although an in-game currency called “rubies” can be bought, earned and ultimately exchanged for items from the in-game store. While current versions are only partially complete, the plan is that ultimately Minecraft Earth will feature everything that’s in the…

FIREPLACE & CHIMNEY When it’s time for Santa to deliver your gifts, you don’t want him to arrive in your world and find there’s no way into your base! You can create a fireplace in many ways, but we recommend placing a campfire in the spot you want to get it burning. This creates a pillar of smoke that you can then use to guide the chimney you build above it. To build a campfire, craft three sticks, a piece of coal and any three blocks of logs, wood, stripped logs or stripped wood. If you like, you can put two or three fires next to one another to make them look a bitmore substantial! Whenyour fire has been built, carve a chimney out to the roof and make sure it’s walled off.…

STRONGEST BLOCK Other than bedrock, which is basically indestructible, the strongest block is obsidian! It has a blast resistance of 6,000 and a hardness of 50, and it can only be mined with a diamond pickaxe. Even then, it takes almost 10 seconds to break. By hand, it takes a massive 250 seconds to destroy – that’s almost four minutes of chipping away at it! TALLEST TREE The tallest tree in Minecraft is a redwood spruce, which can grow 31 blocks high. It’s a variant of spruce that you can create by placing four saplings in a square on the ground and then fertilising them – providing there’s enough space above for them to grow! MOST HEALTH Of all the mobs in the game, the wither has the most health. In the Java Edition it…

LONGEST MINECRAFT MARATHON We don’t recommend trying this one! The longest marathon session of Minecraft lasted for – yikes! – 35 hours, 40 minutes and two seconds. It was completed by Mark Walls-Sawchuk in America, who was raising money for a local children’s hospital. That record was set in June 2016. LONGEST MINECRAFT JOURNEY Since 2011, Kurt J Mac has been using an earlier version of Minecraft, where code in the game goes a bit funny as you walk into what’s become known as ‘the Far Lands’. Updates to the code make what he’s doing impossible in current versions. But so far, he’s travelled over 3.8 million kilometres in the game. He’s raising money for charity, and his record is impossible to break! HOW TO APPLY FOR A WORLD RECORD Reckon you can beat one…

news round-up

OFFICIAL BETA TESTING UNDER WAY FOR MINECRAFT DUNGEONS One of two new Minecraft games heading our way (Minecraft Earth, of course, being the other), Minecraft Dungeons is currently set for release sometime next spring. This is a different kind of Minecraft game, being an action adventure viewed from the side. What’s more, early testing has now begun. Mojang is running a closed beta test that’s sadly only open to over 18s, but the fact that it’s reached this stage suggests the game is moving closer to completion. Rest assured we’ll be featuring a lot more about Minecraft Dungeons in future issues! MINECRAFT HEADS TO MORE SCHOOLS IN WALES More and more schools are bringing Minecraft into the classroom. In Wales, it’s set to be available to over 450,000 school pupils thanks to government…

GETTING SUGAR The easiest way to get sugar is to craft it from sugar cane. Each piece of sugar cane collected can be crafted directly into one pile of sugar. It’s also possible to collect sugar directly from witches. Not every witch killed will drop sugar, but each one has a chance of dropping up to six piles of sugar. USING SUGAR Sugar is edible, but you can’t eat it directly – only if you craft it as part of a recipe. Sugar is useful as part of the recipes for cake (two sugar, three wheat, one egg, three milk buckets) and pumpkin pie (one pumpkin, one sugar, one egg). You can also use sugar as part of brewing. Filtering sugar into an awkward potion will create a Potion of Swiftness, while crafting sugar with…
