minecraft live 2020 news round-up

CAVE & CLIFFS Originally voted for at Minecon Live 2019 as the biome people would most like to see updated, the big announcement at Minecraft Live 2020 was that the mountains biome will be getting a new update, with improved cave and mountain generation, plus a host of fresh content. These improvements will appear in Java Edition 1.17 and Bedrock Edition 1.17.0 in what Mojang is calling the CAVE & CLIFFS UPDATE. And, boy, is there a lot to talk about! Note that some of the names might change, as many of these features haven’t yet been officially named. NEW GAMEPLAY The biggest addition to the game is the ability to conduct archaeology! Now, you can find items in certain areas of gravel and dirt using a new archaeology brush item. You’ll find…

winter build tips

GIANT SNOWMAN BASE TIP 1: DON’T START FROM SCRATCH When you’re building a big structure, it can help to begin with something that’s already part of the way there. We chose to build our snowman around a small hill because it saves time filling in the interior and gaps. As an added bonus, it means you can dig out lots of useful materials, like dirt, stone and snow, as well as any potential ores you find. TIP 2: SMALL DETAILS ADD A LOT! We gave our snowman a working pipe by using a campfire and some wood blocks. Slabs make it look like the snowman’s mouth is holding the pipe, and we used black concrete for the detailing around his face and hat. When you’re building with snow, you can use snow…

redstone comparators explained

CRAFTING In Survival mode, redstone comparators can be obtained only by crafting, but they’re fairly simple to make. On a 3x3 crafting grid, you need to put three stone blocks on the bottom row, a piece of Nether quartz in the centre, and a redstone torch in the slots to the quartz’s left, right and top, as shown above. This will create one comparator. USAGE Comparators have four uses: they can maintain a redstone signal, compare a redstone signal, subtract strength from a redstone signal, or measure the state of a block. Here’s how it works! To make this happen, redstone comparators can accept redstone signal inputs from each side, while outputting one from the front. The arrow on a comparator points to its front, where you’ll find a single redstone torch, which can…

how to make a respawn anchor

COMPONENTS Respawn anchors are crafted using glowstone and crying obsidian. Both are quite easy to find, but in case you need a refresher here are the best ways to get hold of them! GLOWSTONE is abundant in the Nether, but when broken it shatters into dust. You can collect several pieces of glowstone per block broken, then it takes four pieces of glowstone dust to craft a new glowstone block. You can also buy glowstone from Journeyman-level clerics and some wandering traders, while glowstone dust can be collected by killing witches. CRYING OBSIDIAN is most easy to find as part of ruined portals, which you’ll discover in both the Nether and the Overworld. It can only be mined with a diamond pickaxe. It can also be bartered for with piglins, and collected as…

item of the month

ABOUT BOOKS Books are incredibly useful, so perhaps the strangest thing about them is that they’re no good on their own! A plain book can be crafted from one piece of leather and three pieces of paper, but at point it’s good for very little. Still, books have so many uses and turn up in so many ways that it’s hard to fit them all into two pages! GETTINGBOOKS As well as crafting books, it’s possible to collect them – plenty are generated in the Overworld, after all. If you mine a book shelf block, found in a village library, some woodland mansion rooms or a strong hold library, you can collect three books. Books also generate in plains and desert house chests (in stacks of one) and in ship wreck map chests (in…
