the mob taming guide

HORSES, DONKEYS & MULES Taming a horse, as well as donkeys and mules, can be done easily. First, you have to befriend it by approaching with an empty hand and getting on its back. Initially, it will probably just throw you off. Repeat this enough times, though, and hearts will appear above its head, indicating that it accepts you as a rider. Now, you can open the inventory while riding it and equip a saddle or some armour. Riding horses lets you move a lot quicker even than sprinting, and can allow you to carry extra goods. If you have a donkey or mule, you can equip it with saddlebags by using a chest on it! PARROTS To tame parrots, simply feed them seeds – melon, pumpkin, wheat and beetroot seeds all count. There’s…

the hardest things to find… and where to find them

EMERALD ORE This rare form of emerald only appears in the mountains biome and its variants. As of version 1.17, it can appear in the top 220 levels of the map, so you can find it high up in mountains or relatively far below the surface! Each block will drop one emerald when broken using an iron, diamond or Netherite pickaxe. OCEAN MONUMENTS Found in the deep ocean biome only, monuments are huge underwater fortresses. The easiest way to find them is to use an ocean explorer map, which will lead you straight to one, but the real rarities are their unusual blocks – as well as prismarine, of which they are made, you can collect prismarine lanterns (using a Silk Touch pickaxe) and sponges, both of which are impossible to get elsewhere! STRONGHOLDS Almost…

build a tnt cannon

MATERIALS You’ll need the following: 16 x Obsidian; 1 x Quartz slab; 2 x TNT (minimum!); 2 x Stone buttons; 12 x Redstone dust; 1 x Water bucket » STEP ONE: The barrel Start by building a “U” shape on the ground using your obsidian blocks. This is the “barrel” of the cannon. It should be seven blocks long, with an opening facing the direction you want to shoot your TNT. » STEP TWO: The nozzle Place the slab in the opening, and to the immediate right or left of it place your final obsidian block so it’s two blocks high on one side. This block is where you’ll attach the ammo, slightly above the quartz slab. » STEP THREE: The propellent Place the water source block at the end of the cannon, as far away from…

caves & cliffs latest

AZALEA UPDATES You can now collect azalea and flowering azalea bushes, and plant them in flower pots. Note that these aren’t the same as the trees – they’re the smaller versions that grow underground in lush caves. Collect them with shears and/or grow them into full-size trees with bone meal. Flowering azalea can also be used as part of the recipe for a new variant of suspicious stew, although at the moment it’s not known what its effect will be when eaten! Additionally, rooted dirt (which grows below azalea trees) can now be turned into normal dirt with the use of a hoe. AXOLOTLS Everyone’s favourite new mob has a few changes too! In real life, axolotls play dead when attacked to try and discourage predators, which is being replicated in Minecraft as long…

item of the month

ABOUT FISHING RODS Fishing rods are tools used primarily for fishing, though also as part of some recipes. They can be crafted by the player, collected from various places, or bought from villagers. To use a rod, the player must cast it towards a water source block, at which point it will be possible to reel in a fish (treasure or junk) when the float dips below the surface of the water. A successful catch removes one durability from the rod’s durability total. On the Java Edition a rod can make 64 catches, and on Bedrock it can make 384. When a rod loses all of its durability, it breaks permanently. COLLECTING FISHING RODS Rods can be easily crafted using three sticks and two string, and it’s possible to repair two damaged rods by…
