everything new in the cave & cliffs update

AMETHYST BLOCKS The new amethyst blocks are generated as part of geodes and come in several types. Buds grow on full-size blocks and eventually grow into an amethyst cluster, which drops amethyst shards when broken. They emit an increasing amount of light at every stage, up to level 5 for a full cluster. Shards can be crafted into a decorative block of amethyst, which also generates as part of a geode and can be mined directly. The budding amethyst block, which grows buds, can’t be obtained even with a Silk Touch pickaxe and will never drop when mined. AZALEA BLOCKS There are two types of azalea block: one is a small bonsai-like block with no blossom and the other is a variant with pink blossom. They can grow from moss blocks if bone…

how to cure a zombie

RECOGNISING ZOMBIE VILLAGERS Zombie villagers are fairly easy to spot in amongst other zombies, mostly because they’re dressed in their old clothes! Note that husks and drowned can’t be villagers – only regular zombies. There’s a 5% chance (one in 20) that any regular zombie spawned will be a zombie villager, and zombies have a chance to turn villagers into zombies by killing them. On Easy difficulty, this chance is 0% so it never happens, on Normal difficulty the chance is 50%, and on Hard difficulty it’s 100%. There’s also one place where you can always find a zombie villager as long as you’re not on Peaceful mode, and that’s an igloo basement… IGLOO BASEMENTS Half of all igloos have a basement, accessible from a trapdoor hidden beneath their carpet. Inside, you’ll find everything…

build a holiday resort

CHOOSE A SITE To start building your park, first you have to choose a good site. We recommend looking for a temperate biome – somewhere not too hot, not too cold, like grass plains or savanna. After all, you don’t want to spend all your time in a frozen wasteland or halfway up a mountain! Make sure the area you choose is next to the ocean or a lake, and that it’s nice and safe, so you don’t end up falling into a ravine or find mobs crawling out of a nearby cave! Once you’ve picked a site, clear out the grass and flatten an area. BUILD ACCOMMODATION The essence of any holiday park is the accommodation. We’re going to build some small chalets – one- or two-person rooms big enough to contain…

item of the month

ABOUT HOES Hoes are tools that can be used for two main things: tilling dirt, and collecting certain plants quickly. Hoes come in the standard materials for a tool – wood, stone, iron, gold, diamond and Netherite – and have variable speed, enchantability and durability. Golden hoes are the weakest, with just 32 durability, while a Netherite hoe has 2031 durability. Hoes are perhaps the least useful of all tools, although they’re necessary for growing crops. You probably won’t use as many hoes as you will the other items, but it’s worth adding one to your arsenal fairly quickly! COLLECTING HOES The easiest way to craft a hoe is out of wood using two sticks and two wood planks of any type. You can substitute the planks for gold ingots, iron ingots, cobblestone (or…

block of the month

NETHER WART BLOCKS ABOUT NETHER WART BLOCKS Nether wart blocks are found in the Nether and are mostly just used for decoration. Although they can be crafted from Nether wart, they’re not a resource storage block because they can’t be crafted back into the original Nether wart plants for use. Nether wart blocks come in two variants: the standard red kind, which appears in Crimsons Forests, and a turquoise warped wart block, which appears in Warped Forests and can’t be crafted. One other notable difference between the two blocks is that ALL Nether mobs can spawn on red Nether wart blocks, but warped wart blocks will prevent piglins, zombified piglins and hoglins from spawning (though not skeletons or endermen). GETTING NETHER WART BLOCKS Both types of Nether wart block can be most quickly harvested using a…
